Mushrooms is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Unlike other crops, mushroom growth does not rely on soil fertility nor is growth impeded by excessive rockiness. Mushrooms can only grow in areas protected from direct sunlight, unlike traditional crops that need plenty of sun to grow. Mushrooms growth will still be stunted by excessive ground pollution.

Production

Growing mushrooms is an option early in the game but it is likely logistically inaccessible for awhile. Mushrooms must be grown underground in a cave, sufficiently far away from sunlight. This takes time to carve out a cavern with Mining Camps, and the resulting Stone may be difficult to handle early game. Utilize the farming overlay set to mushrooms to determine if your cavern is suitable for planting. Parts of your cavern may need to higher than 1 cube to accommodate structures such as those needed for heating in the winter.

Take care not to accidentally disrupt your mushroom farms. Aggressive mining or infrastructure work (e.g., Water Pipe, Steam Pipe) can rupture your cavern an expose portions to sunlight, ruining your mushroom soil fertility.

Usage

Food

While mushrooms can be eaten raw by Whiskers, it is a good idea to up convert them to other food sources once researched. Mushroom Stew and Fish Skewers provide substantial benefits. It is also a good idea to prohibit stocking raw mushrooms at Cafes and Dining Halls once these recipes become available.

Mushrooms are acquired particularly slowly compared to other raw food sources like Berries and Fish.

Trade

Mushrooms cannot be sold to pay taxes or pirate ransoms.

Island Trading: Wanted by Logging islands.
