Berries is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Like all crops, it requires proper soil conditions, adequate lighting, and protection from harsh environmental factors to thrive.
Production
Berries can be grown from the very start once you can afford to build a Farm. As a "native crop," berries require less nutrients from the soil in which they are planted. This makes them a fairly stable food source crop that requires less management than other crops. You can expect multiple years of planting before fertilizer may be needed to boost the soil back to full condition.
Alternatively, berries can be foraged utilizing a Forage Hut. Natural patches of berries appearing on the map are consumed once harvested and never regrow. These berry patches are a vital source of food in the early game before Farms and Fishing Docks are affordable.
Usage
Food
As the game progresses, berries can be used to produce better foods, such as Berry Soup and Jam Pastries. These recipes essentially turn one berry into more food units with the addition of inedible ingredients like Flour. They also have a higher quality and give greater speed and production buffs to your Whiskers. There are currently no food variety buffs, so the best quality food that can be sustained should be pursued.
Trade
Berries have little value (5 coins per berry) so even great surpluses may not be an effective way to pay taxes.
Island Trading: Offered for trade by Farming islands.
