From Super Fantasy Kingdom Official Wiki
Units gain XP when they consume something in the Tavern in the evening after fighting. When a unit got enough XP it will level up and its stats increase.
The units enter the tavern in a random order (downed units first), and each unit chooses a food that gives them the most XP.
