Fire Tenders sole job is to keep fires burning in your colony. Whiskers assigned to these stations will fetch and store a small stockpile of fuel at the building until it is needed somewhere within its radius. This is primarily Bonfires and Heating Stoves until Steam Boilers become available. Campfires consume logs and not fuel.
Until you have Steam Boilers, Fire Tenders are only needed when the temperatures reach 10C or below. You can leave these buildings empty until the weather demands you start up your heaters again.
Like other logistics-style buildings, you only need to put as many Whiskers in them as the work demands. So, you may only need one Whisker for a small number of heaters.
The radius of the Fire Tender is 3D and spherical so it can cover some heaters located below its plane.
The Fire Tender can store up to 21 units of fuel but will be set to a maximum of 21 by default. You can adjust this to fit your needs.
Once Steam Boilers are obtained, Fire Tenders are needed to keep them stocked with fuel frequently. This means there will no longer be seasons when you can empty those Fire Tenders to reassign Whiskers. The tradeoff is that Steam Boilers will centralize your Fire Tenders and will likely need fewer during winter.
