Kingmaker is the player-versus-player mode. Instead of bosses, you face the builds of other players. The items you have unlocked in Woodland and Swampland can show up, limited by the bundles you choose at the start.

Bundles

The items are split into six bundles, three per area:

  • Woodland Red , Woodland Blue and Woodland Yellow
  • Swampland Red , Swampland Blue and Swampland Yellow

Before each run you pick 3 bundles; only their items can appear. The banner on an item's page shows its bundle, and Woodland items and Swampland items can be sorted by bundle.

Your choice also decides which Kingmaker itemsets and Cauldron recipes are possible, and a few locations need a certain bundle (see Kingmaker map).

Winning

Win a streak of battles against other players' builds to claim a Golden Crown. Crowns unlock cosmetic skins. (The game's texts say three wins in a row in one place and five in another; the exact number still needs to be confirmed.)

Champions

  • At the end of a run you can carry on and challenge an undefeated champion. If you win, your build takes their place and becomes the new undefeated champion.
  • Your champion earns 1 crown for every win against other players while it is in the pool.
  • A champion that reaches 10 crowns retires into the Hall of Fame, is saved in its own tab of your champion list and shows up in the global Hall of Fame.
  • When a new patch comes out, old champions retire with +1 crown. Champions holding items that are no longer possible together are also retired with +1 crown.
  • You never face your own champion.
  • Leaving during a champion challenge forfeits the run.

Differences from single-player runs

  • There are no Gold or Diamond chests, and Treasure Chest items are never Golden or Diamond.
  • There are no banishes.
  • The map is different: see Kingmaker map. Some locations only appear here, such as the Doomsayer, the Farmer, the Scrying Pool and the Horse Carriage.
  • The Doomsayer lets you reroll your next opponent, including champions.

Friend battles

Friend battles are real-time 1v1 matches against a friend. Both players start from the same seed and play five stages; the first to win 3 battles wins the match. After each battle your health goes back to what it was before that battle, and the loser gets 5 extra gold.

Weapon mastery

Becoming a champion with a weapon awards that weapon's Kingmaker mastery (see Weapon Mastery).
