A Season is a span of time with similar weather conditions.
In the Clanfolk game each season lasts 10 days (of 1800 seconds each), making each year 40 days before the cycle starts again. Clanfolk will find some seasons better for Outdoor work and others (Winter) better for Indoor work, however most Jobs can be done all year round.
While Seasons will have broad characteristics, individual days of any season could feel more like a different season, e.g. an Autumn day may have Snow, which is expected in Winter. Much of the player's first couple of seasons needs to be preparing their Clanfolk for the first Winter; without stockpiling Food and making warm homes/clothes their population will likely die of starvation or hypothermia.
The severity of the Seasons may be altered during Game Creation with a few obvious options; heavy Rain/Snow, Colder Winter, Chilling Winds.
Animals will also be impacted by the change of seasons, especially Winter; Wildlife breed less and struggle for food, Livestock/Pets require water and food be provided as they can't satiate those needs as easily.
After the first year the seasons still provide challenges to the player (and their Clan) but with the basic infrastructure in place survival will seem easier than it did during the first Winter.
Summer
- Every new game starts on the first day of Summer with the Clanfolk chosen by (or randomly allocated to) the player crowded together in a small area of the Map. Typically close to a Lake and some Berry Bushes.
Demo games start in the same way and end just before the transition to Autumn. - Clothing other than Linen (or Plaid) may result in the Clanfolk overheating. A Clanfellow is unlikely to choose wearing such.
- Visitors will be most likely to appear on the map. (Requires unhidden Signs.)
Autumn (Fall)
- Crops may no longer be planted. But will continue to grow at a decreasing rate.
- Daily Temperatures will start to drop, leading to fewer occasions for Linen Clothing being required and other clothing starting to be worn.
- Mushroom growth is increased. Both in quantity and in speed of growth, especially if the player has kept Stumps after cutting down Trees.
- Visitors decline in frequency, and will have low Satisfaction if made to wait outside in the cold.
Winter
- Crops will stop growing, and they will be reset to 0% growth until Spring.
- Snow will fall covering the ground, slowing movement on exposed tiles.
- Lakes will freeze, which prevents gathering and drinking from them directly, but allows walking across the ice.
- Water Troughs and Water Bowls will freeze if left outside or in unheated rooms. Livestock and pets may eat snow as a last resort to meet their Water Need, which lowers their Care Attribute.
- Water Dippers and Bathtubs will also freeze outside, or in unheated Rooms, but Wells remain usable.
- Clanfolk outside for any length of time without Furs or Wool Clothing will get very cold very fast, potentially leading to hypothermia.
- Visitors will be least likely to appear on the map. If made to wait outside in the cold Satisfaction may drop to zero very quickly.
- Due to the reduced temperature Clanfolk will require more food than they did in prior seasons. (Approximately 1.5 times normal, so 15 days of food to last 10 days of Winter.)
- Wolves may start to spawn on the Map at the beginning of the first Winter.
- Wild Animals spawn rate will be reduced to a minimum.
- Clanfolk can still till soil before Spring.
- With enough Livestock in a barn heating may not be as essential as presumed.
Spring
- Temperatures consistently rise above freezing again.
- Being outside will no longer be consistently unpleasant without Fur or Wool Clothing. But clothing will still be desired by the Clanfolk.
- Clanfolk may start Planting crops.
- Fishing (and using Eel Traps) will again be possible.
- Wash Zones and Drink Zones can be used again, Animals will start to drink at Lakes again.
