Consuming Food is required for the continuation of life.
NB. The reader may have been looking to find one of the following instead.
- Food (Stockpile) - a place for Clanfolk to Haul and store items that fall into the food Category
- Food Attribute - an indication of how hungry Clanfolk are.
- Food Production - a more detailed indication of how Clanfolk get the Food listed here.
Clanfolk will typically eat twice a day (Sunrise and Sunset), taking Food from Stockpiles, a Cooking Pot, Pantry Shelves, or other locations.
Livestock will also eat regularly, for most of the year they graze on plants growing wild. During Winter they rely on Clanfolk keeping Hay Troughs and/or Grain Troughs stocked.
Pets will be best served by use of Pet Food Bowls.
Clanfolk
The large table below is detailing the acquisition of Food items, how likely Clanfolk are to choose the item when they want to eat (desirability), the Food Value (FV), and the probable shelf life (Quality) of those items.
The FV indicates how much of their Food Attribute bar will be filled when a Clanfellow consumes that food. Adults and Seniors have a bar with maximum value of 10000 (so Haggis and Neeps will completely sate all hunger), while Juveniles have their bar proportionate to their age (and thus require less food to be considered full). Babies are fed by nursing so don't consume food like older members of the Clan.
With the exception of Dried Mushrooms all food will rot over time, unless kept Frozen. Most, if not all, will also degrade if left in the Rain, or Rats get at it
In addition to the listed means of acquiring Foods, many may be purchased from Traders. This may require Reputation gain first.
Cultivation, for the vegetables, requires Tilled Soil to be planted with Seeds, and will then be largely automated by use of Auto Jobs.
NB. the + beside Cooking Fire in this table indicates that a Stone Fireplace and/or Kitchen could also be used to prepare that food. (Both will take less time for the cooking than a Cooking Fire.)
Food that can only be prepared in the Kitchen will also have an impact on other Attributes of the Clanfellow that eats it. Mostly the Mood, Work, and Warmth Attributes. Satisfaction (only relevant for Visitors) will also raise upon consumption of three of those Foods.
Animals
Livestock
Livestock (Cattle, Chickens, Goats, Pigs, Sheep) will generally fend for themselves most of the year, when Winter comes they rely heavily on Grain and/or Hay Troughs being kept stocked. In order of preference for feeding they will effectively go down this list.
- Grass and other wild plants. Although they will avoid going outside in the rain unless starving.
- Hay Trough / Grain Trough. At most three animals may feed from any Trough at the same time.
- Grain Pallet / Haystack / other containers.
- Seeds / plants on ground (whether in Stockpiles or not).
- Cooked food
Pets
Tame Cats and Deerhounds will both eat from Pet Food Bowls and drink from Water Bowls when such are available. Even when provided with a consistently filled food bowl however, Cats will likely continue to hunt rats and Rabbits.
Food Bowls will require one of the following with each refill;
Meat,
Fish,
Eels, or
Pluck.
Wildlife
- Rabbits will consume grasses and other plants found on the map. Eventually clearing the area around their bunny holes.
- Wild Cats (which can be tamed to become pets) hunt Rabbits, Rats, and Chickens.
- Foxes will hunt Rabbits, and potentially Chickens if not enough Rabbits remain.
- Deer will eat grasses.
- Wolves will hunt any animal aside from Deerhounds, and the Clanfolk themselves.
- Beavers will consume Reed on the shoreline.
