Food Production can take a number of forms in Clanfolk.
Most Food will be consumed by Clanfolk at Sunrise and Sunset, but if their food Attribute becomes low Clanfolk will stop working and find food at other times of the day. While their food need meter has a maximum value of 10,000 for an Adult or Senior they will not require a complete refill at each meal, the amount and type of work done during their workday will heavily influence how much it depleted between meals. Babies will be fed by their mother, Juveniles will eat like Adults but have a lower maximum.
Simply acquiring as much food as possible is inefficient due to rotting, the player should avoid constantly hunting or harvesting. Cooking Meat effectively resets the timer on rotting but Cooked Meat will also rot.
Feeding Clanfolk
As should be expected most Objects relying on Fire for their function are not usable during Rain unless under shelter. The Tiled Peat Stove is enclosed and thus will work in the rain, its heat output however makes it very useful for heating a home, longhouse, or similar during Winter.
Objects that rely on Fire may also Throw Sparks during operation and should be monitored carefully or kept away from flammable Buildings, Objects, Items. The range should be displayed in a thin Red ring (or arc segment for the Stone Fireplace).
Most Cooking Objects will require Branches to provide the fire, a Kitchen requires Charcoal, the Peat Stove needs Dried Peat Brick. As such the Clan will need to stockpile one or more of those fuels for Winter.
Many of the recipes below are not a 1 to 1 process. Instead requiring some multiple of the thing to be cooked, before cooking begins. e.g. Eels are cooked in batches of five.
Food directly from the Map
At game start the Clan will not be able to do much in the way of cooking etc. so will need to eat food obtained directly from the Map. Berries and Mushrooms can be gathered or picked right from the start of the game and each will provide a small portion of an Adults maximum required food need (5% and 7% respectively). If the game setup included Smoked Meat or Dried Mushrooms the Clanfolk may eat through that reserve first, each serve providing 20% or 7% of their food need respectively.
Berries will rot quickly and should not be cleared from all Bushes just because they can be. Mushrooms will grow much faster in Autumn, especially around Tree Stumps. Drying those Mushrooms can provide a lot of food during Winter.

Simple Cooking

With the construction of a Cooking Fire the Clanfolk may cook their food.
- Raw Eels (from an Eel Trap) and Raw Meat (from Animals that are hunted or slaughtered) may be cooked on the Fire. Cooked Meat will provide 30% of Adult food need, Cooked Eel only 20%.
- Raw Fish can be cooked once a Fishing Spot is used to gain them, Cooked Fish results also providing 30%. (This is not an early unlock)
- After cultivating Neeps and/or Onions those can be roasted over a fire, providing Roasted Neeps and/or Roasted Onions. Both provide 15% of food need.
- Eggs may be cooked to become Cooked Eggs which provide 20% food need.
- The Pluck that is obtained from large Animals (Livestock other than Chickens and wildlife like Deer) can become Pluck on a Stick which rots in a single day but provides 30% of food need.
A Stone Fireplace will cook all the same things as a Cooking Fire, but will do so in less time. It also only throws sparks forward which reduces fire risk.
Both heat 108 tiles (10C). The Stone Fireplace must be built against a Wall.

Smoking

A Meat Smoker allows meat and fish to be smoked, without requiring a Clanfellow to stay at a cooking object the entire time something is being cooked. Compared to cooking, smoking meat or fish results in less filling but longer lasting food. (Eels may Not be smoked.)
A Meat Smoker heats 48 tiles (8C).

Bread Making

Bread can be baked regularly as long as the multi stage production chain is maintained.
- This starts with growing Oats, preferably in Tilled Soil for the automation and increased yield.
- Once the Oats are Harvested Oats Sheafs will result.
- Sheaves are broken down into Oat Grain (and Straw) at a Thresher.
- Grain may be processed into Oat Flour at a Quern.
- Flour and water can be mixed at a Dough Table to make Dough. (Having a Jug Pallet nearby is useful.)
- Using a Bread Oven will turn Dough into Bread.
Eating the bread provides 35% of food need. It could instead be used when making stew at a Kitchen (below).

Tiled Peat Stove

To cook Brose the player needs to have the Clanfolk craft a Tiled Peat Stove; with the stove built Clay Bowls, Oat Grain, Dry Peat Bricks and water (from Water Jugs) are used in the cooking. In addition to sating the food need, Brose will also add to Warmth, making it a good Winter meal.

Milk, Butter and Cheese
- With Cows and/or Nanny Goats in the colony they may be milked as long as an empty Milking Bucket is available.
- A Butter Churn can process Milk into Butter, which can be eaten for a small satiation. Or used in a Kitchen for some of the recipes.
- A Cheese Press can process Milk into Cheese, with a shelf life of 15 days.
Kitchen

In addition to all the things that may be cooked at a Cooking Fire and Stone Fireplace (above), a Kitchen can be used to cook more involved meals. In addition to the food ingredients, the food exclusively made in a kitchen will also require water, most require a number of Bowls, and the heating is supplied by Charcoal instead of Branches.
Each of the five meals replenish at least half of the food need an adult has, and some other benefit(s) to Mood, Warmth, Work Attributes. Should visitors (Travellers or Workers) be fed Fish Stew, Haggis, or Haggis and Neeps, they will also have an increase in their Satisfaction Attribute.
A Kitchen heats 75 tiles (10C)
| Kitchen specific |
Cooking Pot

A Cooking Pot will provide Pottage Stew, which will normally be enough to completely refill a Clanfellows Food bar.
12 Meat (
) and 24 Basic Food (
) will be added to an empty Cooking Pot and made into the Stew. Six servings are made and unlike other foods do not Rot as they remain in the Pot until a Clanfellow eats the Stew. Any of the individual ingredients can be disallowed and as long at least one Meat and one of the Basic ingredients can be supplied Stew will be remade when the Pot is emptied.
Storage
With the exception of the Pottage Stew all food will Rot as time passes (Rats speed this process), long term storage of Food requires a Freezer.
The simplest Freezer is no larger than nine tiles mined into a Mountain, with a Jug Pallet holding six Ice Jugs. As long as that Ice doesn't melt it will be sufficient to keep the small room frozen and the food inside will not rot. A larger Freezer will need more Ice Jugs. (Because Mountain Roof has a cooling effect, this is easier inside a mined out Mountain. But can be constructed elsewhere.)
Development / Testing The ability to create a year-round Freezer has been removed.
Feeding Animals
Livestock and pets also require regular feeding.
- For most of the year (not Winter) the Livestock will be able to graze on grass they find growing wild, or grown in pens specifically for them. During Winter Livestock will require a Grain Trough or Hay Trough to be topped up, as well as a Water Trough to avoid drinking Ice.
- Pets will be fed via the use of Pet Food Bowls, and Clanfolk will need to supply them with Raw Meat, Raw Fish, Raw Eels, or Pluck. Cats may go off and hunt rabbits or Rats if they are hungry or bored (see Instinct Attribute). During Winter both Cats and Dogs will also require a Water Bowl in a heated area to avoid drinking Ice.
Wildlife will attend to their own food completely without player intervention.
- Leaving food out for Wild Cats can lead to them becoming tame, at which point they will want food provided by the Clanfolk.
- Deer may leave the Map if Grass becomes too scarce.
- Hunting Wolves sufficiently can lead to them leaving the Map.
- Foxes may choose to try and eat the Chickens if Bunnies become scarce.
