Planting' is one of the Main Toolbar menu headings.

Planting and then Harvesting various plants is the main way Clanfolk can provide themselves with food. Even if relying on Livestock for Meat, it is still required to grow plants, as they must be fed grains etc. during Winter.

Once a Sickle has been used to reap enough of various plants the Clanfolk can Thresh those reaped plants and use the seeds gained to start a cycle of growing.
Most Crops need to be planted in Soil (Reeds only grow on the Shoreline) and some of them can only be planted in Tilled Soil even though they may be found growing in the wilds. Soil used in Planting reduces the movement speed of Clanfolk, who will deviate around growing plants if doing so will be faster.

If the player cannot find particular Crops growing on the Map they may still gain such from Traders after reaching the required Reputation (1 or 2 stars). Gaining the reaped plants may happen without reputation gain but Seeds aren't sold as soon.

Not all Crops that the Clanfolk grow are used for Food; Reed is sued to provide Straw, Flax is used to become Linen clothing (see Clothing Production), Bluebell Heather and Thistle are decorative, Trees provide Branches and Logs.

N.B. While Mushrooms grow on the ground the player cannot instruct the Clanfolk to plant them in any way (leaving Trunks behind after logging trees will result in a higher yield however.)

Tilled Soil

Clanfolk must first have crafted a Stone Hoe to create Tilled Soil. Growing plants in Tilled Soil provides +25% Fertility Bonus and +50 Yield Bonus. Agriculture Auto-Jobs will be added automatically to Plants growing in Tilled Soil, reducing player micromanagement compared to farming on regular Soil. (The player has the option to disable such auto-jobs, and/or alter their default priority.)

Plants

Crops may only be planted during Spring and Summer; during Autumn and Winter planting is impossible (menu options are marked with a stop icon ) although creating Tilled Soil is still possible. During Autumn crops may continue to grow, but at a reduced rate, and if not reaped before Winter they will die off.

This table shows restrictions on planting locations, Seed count to plant a new tile of each plant, base time to sow that tile, how flammable the growing plants will be, and the impact on walking speed that a crop will have. Delivery of seeds to a tile is not counted in sowing time, and the Skill / Mood of the sower may alter the time.
