The Carpenter is a niche building that produces the wooden vise catalyst for the Coppersmith and Blacksmith, and in the late game it produces the luxury item Furniture.

Until Furniture is researched, the only recipe available to the Carpenter is wooden vises. 3 vises are produced at a cost of 2 planks which makes this a fairly cheap and renewable catalyst (source of tree crops) to produce. The users of wooden vises are the Coppersmith and Blacksmith.

Despite the cheap cost, it is recommended to set a production limit on wooden vises because The Claw, the Smuggler, and the Pirates will not purchase it. The Smuggler will provide 34 coins of credit towards a gold bullion for furniture which is on par with the other housing luxury item bedding. Given the expense of constructing furniture, there are better Smuggler trade options like Cut Stone.

Later in the game, furniture can be researched and it will appear as a recipe option at the Carpenter. This is a fairly expensive luxury item costing 1 bronze nails and 3 planks for 3 furniture.

Furniture is distributed by the Luxuries Supplier and is half of the equation for a stone house to receive the 4th and final housing quality star. The other required half being bedding. Regardless of whether or not bedding is supplied, houses containing furniture will generate positive thoughts for its residents.

Furniture, like bedding, will need to be continuously produced and distributed to maintain the positive thoughts and increased housing quality. This should be considered before production of furniture begins.

The catalyst for the Carpenter building is oil which is produced at the Oil Press at the cost of fish and steam. This is a relatively cheap and renewable catalyst that can be used liberally, unless there is a food, water, or fuel shortage.

Details

  • Its catalyst, Oil, is used up at one per 20 production cycles.
