A wooden bridge that can be chained end to end to across an area without supports.
Utilizing this bridge is primarily an esthetic choice for crossing short gaps between islands. Not needing supports can save some logs, but it is a major speed loss compared to paying the support costs to just build Stone Path between islands.
Speed is a major factor when sending Whiskers between islands. Unless you set up a separate colony on the new island, lengthy transit times will likely earn a "long path" warning for Whiskers.
Consider faster modes of transportation across distances such as a railcar network, Whisker Launcher (small gaps), or Stone Paths.
