This page presents the game mechanics for events. For a list of all events in Terra Invicta, see Narrative Event List instead.
Events are semi-random incidents that Factions can usually respond to in a number of different ways. There are a wide variety of events, including disasters, research breakthroughs, political scandals, lucky discoveries, mutinies, and many more.
Event Mechanics
Under default campaign settings, the game tries to select an average of 5 events each month. The Average_Monthly_Events slider in the Game Options can be used to change this to any value between 0 and 10, with 0 completely turning off all non-forced events.
At the start of each month, the game picks a random number that is at most 2 away from the Average_Monthly_Events number. This randomly picked number represents the number of events that the game will try to trigger this month.
Each event has a set of conditions that must be satisfied in order for it to be able to trigger. These conditions can vary wildly, and can include:
- Only occurring during certain months of each year.
- Only occurring if there are low loyalty Councilors.
- Only occurring if Climate Change has reached certain thresholds.
- Only occurring if there are Aliens on Earth.
- Only occurring after certain Technologies have been researched.
- Only occurring if a specific Faction exists.
- Only occurring if there are Nations that are investing heavily into the
Spoils Priority. - Only occurring if there are Habs that produce
Research. - Only occurring once every X months.
- Only occurring to the same target once every X months.
The game will randomly select from the events whose conditions are satisfied, and then set those events to trigger at random times within the rest of the month. If any randomly selected event's conditions are no longer satisfied at its random trigger time, then it simply does not trigger at all. So there is in fact no guarantee that any events would happen each month.
On the other hand, some events are forced: These events are always set to trigger at a random time within the rest of the month, if their conditions are satisfied. There is no limit on the number of forced events, and hence no limit on the number of events that could happen each month. Forced events are usually (but not always) story-related events.
When an Event triggers at its random time, one more randomization can take place: the event can now pick a random target to hit, as long as that target satisfies all of the event's conditions.
Note: All Factions share the same pool of events. So a player could potentially get more events to happen for their faction by making sure that the other factions do not satisfy the event's conditions.

Global Milestones
Note: Technically, the game considers these to be global milestones, not events. They do not actually use the game's event system. But they look like events.
