Terra Invicta Official Wiki:Style Guide

For now this WIP: subject to change, open to review, and awaiting consensus.

If you are unsure about the preferred editing style, looking at how other similar pages have been edited is often all you need for reference. If you are wondering about something more specific, not mentioned here, you can always ask on this, or an articles' talk page, or in the wiki Discord channel.

The Wikipedia Manual of Style[1] might also give you some direction of best practices to follow (though keep in mind this is a game wiki, and therefore can afford to often be more flexible than that guidance).

Spelling

The game uses American English, with that in mind, this is also the preferred choice when editing articles (with the obvious exception of articles being written for speakers of other languages).

Titles and names

Where relevant, match what the player sees when playing the game. Otherwise: sentence case is preferred, but use title case for proper nouns, including for page names. E.g. "United States of America"/ "The people are united".

Page titles

Page titles should be concise and most relevant to the subject material. Generally, don't pluralize a title unless it is always plural in the game, or the page is primarily a list/summary.

If a title might be ambiguous, or relate to one or more pages, you can use parentheses for disambiguation. For example: China and China (2070).

File names

Convention is that most files from the game are uploaded with the same name they have in the game files. This may also help with modules that autogenerate content for pages.

An exception to this is nation names for flags, which have been uploaded to match the nation names used on the wiki (which follow the game's localization titles).

If you feel the need to alter a file for a specific use or just its name for clarification, it is recommended to add a suffix onto the default name, for instance: F_EUR_06_portrait.png

Files not used by the game should be given clear and logical naming, and follow naming consistency by type. If unsure, try to look for a naming convention to follow based on other similar uploaded files.

Category names

Contrary to page titles, category names should generally be in title case and usually plural. Exceptions to this would be category names that are explanatory, e.g. "Pages that do something", or don't need to be plural because they are a singular category in nature anyway, e.g. "The Solar System".

Similar to page titles, try to keep category names as concise and unambiguous as possible. If you need a category for something technical in nature that is unlikely to be of use to the average reader, you might want to consider using a hidden category.
