Citizens require food to survive at regular periods to not starve.
Food is produced at different cycles thoughout the year, and any Food that is not stored before the end of winter will spoil and be lost.
Food can be stored in small quantities on Outposts, and in large quantities in Granaries. Though that is not their intended purpose, Markets and Docks can also store food.
