Residential buildings provide beds and shelter to Citizens, allowing them to sleep at night and survive the passing of the Seasons. They also provide tax revenue, making them the only passive source of Gold in Nova Roma (compared to active merchant trading via docks).

Residential buildings can support a set number of citizens living in it, with some of those residents acting as "head of household". Those workers are responsible for stocking up the residential building with food for sustenance, Charcoal (or Wood) for warmth, and amenities such as Pottery or Wine for happiness buffs.

Houses that lack the basic food or warmth resources will result in citizens being unhappy and eventually dying, while lacking amenities merely causes a happiness debuff. Citizens without a house will also cause a Happiness debuff while they are homeless, and will eventually leave Nova Roma if not settled.

Types of Residences

Each residential building has different resident and worker capacities, as well as different tax revenue amounts.

The hovel is the least space efficient, but also the cheapest to build and mantain; hovels only require a small amount of items ( Food and Wood) for satisfaction, but as a result don't bring in much gold.

The insulas are the most efficient housing buildings, but require considerable more goods and services in exchange for a higher tax revenue.

The Villa Rustica is roughly equivalent to a medium insula in terms of resources and tax revenue, but also provides a farming bonus in a 3 tile radius around it.
