The titular alien antagonists of the game. Almost nothing is currently known about them, save that they are a biomechanical horror that poses a threat to all the vying factions of the Wayback system, and possibly all of humanity should the player fail to stop them.

Story Progession
When first arriving in the Wayback System, the player has no inkling whatsoever that the MENACE is lurking in wait. However, after completing a certain number of operations (against Pirates, Alien Wildlife, and the Rogue Army), you will receive a mysterious new mission, "Investigate Settlement" that initially seems like a routine investigation of a town attacked by pirates or some other mundane threat. Upon touching down and nearing the Admin Center, however, you quickly find out the residents suffered a far more horrifying fate. Your troops are ambushed by the most basic MENACE enemy type, a group of Construct Drones grafted out of the unfortunate townsfolk, and must survive for 4 turns until the dropship can return and pick them up.
Following this mission, Hayflick, quoting SAGE will provide your mysterious adversary a name: Mechanically Enhanced + Neurologically Augmented Combat Enemy...or, naturally, MENACE. The campaign against this threat will begin in earnest. Now, anti-MENACE Operations will appear alongside the other ones the player is familiar with by this point. However, you will also notice one of the planets in the Starmap surrounded by a red aura and partially covered up by a malignant red shade. This represents the presence and extent of MENACE infection on that world. The advance of the MENACE can be halted by winning the aforementioned anti-MENACE Operations, but ignoring or failing them will result in the alien threat growing stronger until it overtakes the world entirely. If the MENACE takes over an entire planet the following will happen:
The story faction of the planet is destroyed All OCIs which were unlocked by that faction can't be installed anymore Only [REDACTED] operations spawn on that planet from now on
If this happens to every planet in the Wayback System (at the time of Early Access, three), you will lose the campaign and get a "Game Over" screen, so anti-MENACE operations should generally take top priority once they start appearing!
MENACE units drop loot items that can be used at the Workshop to create unique items not found anywhere else in the game.
Menace Units
| Name | Squad Size | Equipment | Hit Points | Armor | Armor Durability | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8-9 | Advanced Alloys, Weapons Parts | 25 | 15 | 20 | Regular humans transformed into cybernetic monstrosities through incomprehensible technological means. Armed with almost primitive projectile weapons and mining lasers. | |
| 3 | Advanced Alloys, Cybernetic Optics,Mutated Tissue | 120 | 45 | 60 | Human soldiers and military personnel were apparently the organic matter this monstrosity is based on. Extremely durable and armed with high powered projectile weapons. | |
| 1 | 30 | 60 | 100 | Floaters, or Hovermines, move randomly until they detect an enemy. They hover towards the target and explode on contact. They are both hard to detect and difficult to hit. | ||
| 2-3 | Mutated Tissue, Volatile Reagents | 60 | 35 | 50 | Humans reworked into living bombs. They carry no weapons but will try and get close to player units and explode to cause damage. | |
| 3 | Cybernetic Optics, Bioprocessor | 100 | 35 | 50 | A toad-like construct that keeps a low profile and is armed with some sort of autocannon. It apparently tends to lurk and keep a distance; hence, the troops named it skirmisher. | |
| 1 | Fusion Power Cells, Advanced Alloys, Cybernetic Optics, Weapons Parts | 300 | 130 | 400 | A large vehicle-like construct moving across the battlefield on tank tracks. Armed with variety of weapon systems, it is dangerous to both infantry and vehicles. | |
| 1 | Mutated Tissue, Volatile Reagents, Fusion Power Cells | 480 | 60 | 250 | A fabled construct master unit consisting of a giant, hovering organic body. No information is available about its abilities, behavior, or weaponry. |

| Construct Activity | Enough reports about disappearing civilians has made the situation impossible to ignore: the Menace is active here. We have to immediately search for any Constructs and take them out before they can establish production facilities and a lasting presence. |

Strategies
MENACE units cannot be suppressed, only pinned, and further, tend to be big bricks of HP, across multiple units. Thankfully, they also tend to have relatively low armor. The best strategy tends to be to focus fire them down as much as possible to pin each unit. Utilize weaponry with significant amounts of damage right up front, rather than high AP or highly supressive attacks.
