Promotions and Demotions

Promotions and demotions are actions performed by the player to promote or demote a Squad Leader (SL) or Pilot. Promoting a character does not happen automatically and costs promotion points.

The cost of promoting the same character increases with each promotion. Additionally, the cost is also affected by Promotion Cost Factor, which is based on their SL Rating.

Ranks

Characters can hold one of eight ranks, ranging from (1) Lance Corporal to (8) Master Gunnery Sergeant.

Promotion

Promotion Points

Promotion points can be earned in the following ways:

• Completing missions
• Fulfilling bonus objectives
• Exceeding mission requirements
• Completing events

The higher the Mission Rating, the more promotion points you will receive for completing that mission. The game rewards you with promotion points for each individual mission, so even if you fail an operation, you will still gain promotion points.

The OCI DCRAC provides a +20% increase to all earned Promotion Points.

There are two Strategic Assets relevant to Promotion Points:

• Alien Infestation: Battlefield of the Spectacle increases earned Promotion Points by 10% for the rest of the operation
• Rogue Army: Daring Raid rewards 20 promotion points outright

Promotion Cost Factor

Promotion Cost Factor is a multiplier which affects the number of points required for a promotion. Although each SL has a Promotion Cost Factor, the cost factor is aligned with the SL Rating:

• 1-Star SLs: 0.8 Promotion Cost Factor. The least costly to promote. (Examples: Marta Carda, Garry Boganwright)
• 2-Star SLs: 1.0 Promotion Cost Factor. Essentially the baseline in promotion cost. (Examples: Edwin Pike, Tech)
• 3-Star SLs: 1.3 Promotion Cost Factor. The costliest characters to promote. (Examples: Jane Darby, Achilleas Kainoo)

Although the differences are minor at first, they become more significant at higher ranks, resulting in a gap which could take several missions to cover.

Note: Although Charles Lim has a Promotion Cost Factor of 1 like the other 2-Star SLs, his unique starting perk reduces promotion costs by 30% anyway, without changing Promotion Cost Factor, making his promotions the cheapest of all SLs.

Demotion

If absolutely necessary, a character can be demoted down to a lower rank, which refunds half of the promotion points of the corresponding rank. Perks gained through promotions can only be removed in reverse order. This means that, at any given time, only the most recently purchased perk can be removed.
