Provides speed or production bonuses to adjacent buildings with steam power. 2x1x2

The Steam Engine intakes piped steam from one of two available connection points and provides a large production bonus to directly adjacent buildings. The amount of steam consumed is related to the number of connected buildings and their type (e.g., elevator versus factory). Steam is also only consumed when an adjacent building is operating. This means even if it is adjacent to multiple buildings, only the operational ones will influence the consumption rate of steam.

To make this explicitly clear, whether you assign one steam engine each to 4 different buildings or one steam engine connected simultaneously to 4 buildings, the steam consumption rate will be the same. The only advantage to connecting a single engine to multiple buildings is the cost of placement in both resources and space compared to building multiple engines.

Steam Engines placed next to an elevator will speed up the transit time. This significantly helps for helping Whiskers navigate deep mines.

When placing a Steam Engine, buildings it will work on still be highlighted in white lines. Additionally, connecting lines will show up to indicate which buildings will receive the production bonus upon placement. If a building is still under construction, it will not provide the connection indicator.

Steam Engines are built instantly upon placement.

Make sure you have sufficient steam to handle Steam Engines. They can consume a lot of Steam while in operation. This may mean building extra Steam Boilers.

Provides +100 production speed to attached factories while each one is in operation and steam is available.
