The elevator entrance is one of two required components to build a working elevator. The other required component is the Elevator Shaft. At least two elevator entrances must be placed on an elevator for Whiskers to be able to use the elevator. The entrances may be separated by any number of Elevator Shafts. Additional Elevator Entrances can be placed on the elevator to allow for multiple stops. Elevator Entrances are not required to face the same direction which can allow for some creative elevator options.
Five whiskers can use an elevator at once. Whiskers will queue at an Elevator Entrance until it arrives. For higher traffic areas, it may be prudent to install multiple elevators side-by-side to limit wait times.
Power is not required to operate elevators and they will function immediately when placed correctly. There is no construction time to place Elevator Entrances or Shafts.
Elevators can have their speed increased by adjacent Steam Engines. There is an Achievement that involves creating a 23+ tile tall elevator that uses steam power.
Elevators are not a replacement for all stairs or other elevation changing transit options. Long Stairs do not have limits on the number of Whiskers that can use them at once. Slides, similarly, do not have a throughput limit and have extreme descent speeds that elevators cannot match.
Elevators make the most since when a small quantity of Whiskers are reliant upon using them. Mine shafts are a prime example where Elevators shine. There are many more applications to creatively utilize them. Just be fully aware of their limitations.
