The Chemist produces saline solution and soap.
You may overlook this building until you get the late game research completed for the luxury item soap. This is because saline solution is not a high priority item unless you hired a lot of sickly Whiskers. Even then, Whiskers will recover, albeit more slowly, at the Medical building.
Saline solution costs 1 rock salt and 5 pumped water to produce 3 saline solution. As stated above, saline solution will be used in a Medical building should a Whisker fall ill. If you want to sell saline solution, you will need to up convert it with mushrooms at the apothecary to medicine. The Smuggler will give a whopping 144 coins in credit toward gold bullion for it.
Rock salt is not used in many recipes and is also not in great supply. The Sifting Tower will also consume rock salt to produce the catalyst table salt. You may wish to decide which recipe you wish to prioritize for your colony.
Once soap is researched, it can be produced at the Chemist at a cost of 2 oil, 1 potash, and 13 pumped water to make 5 bars of soap. Like other luxury items, soap is expensive to produce, must be continuously produced to receive its ongoing positive thoughts, and be distributed by a Luxuries Supplier (to bathing facilities in this case).
Soap can be sold to the Smuggler for 13 coins in credit towards a gold bullion. This is far less than the other luxury goods which sell for 34 coins of credit at the Smuggler. It may be better to keep your Whiskers clean than focus on Soap for sale. Even the simple woven cloaks sell for more than soap.
The Chemist requires piped water to function and the intake pipe is in an odd spot at the front of the building, just above the entrance door.
The catalyst for the Chemist is Precision Scales which is an extremely late game research item.
The Chemist is one of a few production buildings that require a Scholar to significantly boost production. Given the rarity of Scholars on Whisker ships, you may need to use a school to train a Whisker to fit into this role.
