Fire tongs are a catalyst created in the Coppersmith that can be used in multiple buildings to speed up production. The buildings that use the fire tongs are: Charcoal Furnace, Ore Furnace, Blast Furnace, and the Tea Roaster

Since producing them requires bronze, you may not have access to this catalyst at the beginning. Fire tongs are a Because of the many uses for bronze, it may be difficult to decide when to begin production for fire tongs, and which buildings to use them in.

Early game uses for fire tongs may be limited to specifically the Ore Furnace in order to more quickly create copper and bronze ingots faster. It may be best to skip the use of fire tongs in the Charcoal Furnace early on due to the resources required to make them.

Once the Blast Furnace is unlocked, it is extremely beneficial to have the fire tongs used in them due to the slow pacing of this building, which produces iron and steel ingots every 233 seconds. Comparatively, the ore furnace produces every 144 seconds for copper and bronze, but as many as 377 seconds when producing gold ingots.

The Tea Roaster is a relatively optional late game addition, especially when production of bronze is not of concern.
