The Research Lab will consume resources in accordance with the research tier for whatever you are trying to currently research.  The beginning tier will require planks.  Each tier of research thereafter will require a new resource plus all prior resources required for earlier tiers.  For example,  the 1st Tier will add copper ingots to the previously required planks.

Your educated Whiskers will periodically fetch the necessary resources.  Once the building is fully stocked,  the educated Whiskers will slowly and simultaneously consume all needed resources at once. If you're missing even one resource,  research will stop. That is,  your researchers won't continue to consume all needed planks while waiting on copper.

You can build more Research Labs but you can still only one research one blueprint at a time.  The additional labs will assist in the current research,  decreasing the overall time to research. Do be aware that this will increase the rate of resource usage because more than one Research Lab will be fetching resources and consuming them.  Additionally,  the increased research speed is not linear.  Each Research Lab working will also introduce a coordination penalty which will reduce research speed, but overall research speed will still be increased.

Each Tier of research must also be unlocked before the blueprints in that category become available.  You will need to unlock at least the next metal refinement to be able to progress further.  The current progression is planks, copper, bronze, and iron.  While steel can be unlocked,  it is currently not needed for further research.

The Research Lab is required to research any of the technologies available in the game that are but otherwise unlocked from the start or by receiving a blueprint from The Claw.

Each Research Lab has 2 slots for Educated Whiskers to occupy. There is no guild affiliation for the building.
