PAGENAME is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Like all crops, it requires proper soil conditions, adequate lighting, and protection from harsh environmental factors to thrive.

Production
Tea Leaves can be planted on Farms only after it is researched. It is a late game crop requiring the use of Fertilizer to grow. When using the Farming Tool to look for locations to plant tea, no area will appear ideal. Do your best to pick the best of the bad options and immediately use Fertilizer to bring the nutrient levels to the incredibly high standards for tea (over 100%, which is only achievable with fertilizer). Avoid rocky terrain to avoid the penalties it will inflict on fertility. While rocks can be removed, it will delay your first crops.

Usage
Food
Tea Leaves, like Wheat and Peppers, must be processed before they can be consumed. The Tea Roaster is required to produce drinkable versions of Tea and Fine Tea that can be distributed to Cafes and Dining Halls.

Trade
Tea Leaves cannot be sold, so carefully choose the amount planted so as not to produce more than you can process.

PAGENAME is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Like all crops, it requires proper soil conditions, adequate lighting, and protection from harsh environmental factors to thrive.

Production
Peppers are the last crop you can currently research in the game. They are a late game crop that is the gateway to producing the highest quality foods and tea available.

Peppers, like Tea Leaves, require an enormous amount of nutrients, so you will need Fertilizer to be able to grow them. You will also want to avoid rocky terrain to speed up processing your first crops and avoid the labor lost to farmers picking up rocks.

Usage
Food
The Spice Grinder (researched separately) is required to convert Peppers into Spices. Its conversion rate is lower than other similar crops that require processing before use. For example, peppers have a conversion rate of 1:3 while Wheat has a conversion rate to Flour of 1:5. This is important to consider in deciding how much land to dedicate to peppers, along with the consumption rate of your Fine Kitchens and Tea Roasters.

Trade
Peppers are not purchased by The Claw, The Smuggler, or The Pirates.

Production
Cotton requires micromanagement to grow effectively before Fertilizer is researched and available. It rapidly depletes soil nutrients so periods of setting the fields to fallow are required.

Cotton is not picky about where it is grown and is good to grow on soil that is suboptimal to other essential crops.

Usage
Textiles
Cotton can be converted into Thread at the favorable rate of 1:8 at the Cotton Gin. This is a late game technology, so early grown Cotton should be sold.

Trade
Cotton is a tax crop that sells for 21 coins per unit. This is equivalent to Iron Ore, but is a renewable source of income.

Production
Wheat is a midgame crop that must be researched before it can be planted on any Farm. It is more difficult to cultivate than crops that are available at the beginning of the game. Fertilizer may be necessary to continuously grow it.

Usage
Food
Wheat cannot be consumed raw and requires processing into Flour at the Mill before it can be cooked into any foods. Flour is used to produce higher-quality foods at the Bakery and Soup Kitchen.

Since Wheat converts to 5 times as much Flour in the Mill, you do not need to plant a great deal of it to meet your culinary needs.

Trade
Wheat cannot be sold to pay taxes or pirate ransoms.
PAGENAME is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Like all crops, it requires proper soil conditions, adequate lighting, and protection from harsh environmental factors to thrive.

Production
Flax is a native crop that is available to plant from the start of the game. It is slightly more difficult to plant than the other native crops, but carries similar growing benefits. Flax is gentle on the soil's level of nutrients, so farm fallowing or Fertilizer is unlikely to be needed.

Alternatively, Flax can be foraged utilizing a Forage Hut. Natural patches of Flax appearing on the map are consumed once harvested and never regrow.

Usage
Textiles
Flax is the foundation of the textiles supply chain and should be planted early, preferably before the Forage Hut exhausts the local wild supply. Flax can be used to make Woven Cloaks at the Weaver and Rope and Threads at the Flax Spinner.

You do not need to aggressively plant Flax, but you will need to expand farms to support your growing fiber supply chain.

You can heat small Flax farms in the winter to continue growing and harvesting Flax. This may be helpful in the early game to ensure your Whiskers have clothing in the winter.

Trade
Flax has little value (5 coins per flax) so even great surpluses may not be an effective way to pay taxes.
Stone is a Raw Material that can be processed into Cut Stone at the Stone Cutter. Raw stone has few uses and no trade value, and a robust mining operation can quickly generate an amount of stone that is burdensome to store. Cut Stone is used in constructing Buildings and can be sold to the Smuggler for Gold Bullion, so it is helpful to process as much raw stone into Cut Stone as possible.
PAGENAME is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Like all crops, it requires proper soil conditions, adequate lighting, and protection from harsh environmental factors to thrive.

Production
Growing mushrooms is an option early in the game but it is likely logistically inaccessible for awhile. Mushrooms must be grown underground in a cave, sufficiently far away from sunlight. This takes time to carve out a cavern with Mining Camps, and the resulting Stone may be difficult to handle early game. Utilize the farming overlay set to mushrooms to determine if your cavern is suitable for planting. Parts of your cavern may need to higher than 1 cube to accommodate structures such as those needed for heating in the winter.

Take care not to accidentally disrupt your mushroom farms. Aggressive mining or infrastructure work (e.g., Water Pipe, Steam Pipe) can rupture your cavern an expose portions to sunlight, ruining your mushroom soil fertility.

Usage
Food
While mushrooms can be eaten raw by Whiskers, it is a good idea to up convert them to other food sources once researched. Mushroom Stew and Fish Skewers provide substantial benefits. It is also a good idea to prohibit stocking raw mushrooms at Cafes and Dining Halls once these recipes become available.

Mushrooms are acquired particularly slowly compared to other raw food sources like Berries and Fish.
Trade
Mushrooms cannot be sold to pay taxes or pirate ransoms.
PAGENAME is a crop that can be grown in your colony. Like all crops, it requires proper soil conditions, adequate lighting, and protection from harsh environmental factors to thrive.

Production
Berries can be grown from the very start once you can afford to build a Farm. As a "native crop," berries require less nutrients from the soil in which they are planted. This makes them a fairly stable food source crop that requires less management than other crops. You can expect multiple years of planting before fertilizer may be needed to boost the soil back to full condition.

Alternatively, berries can be foraged utilizing a Forage Hut. Natural patches of berries appearing on the map are consumed once harvested and never regrow. These berry patches are a vital source of food in the early game before Farms and Fishing Docks are affordable.

Usage
Food
As the game progresses, berries can be used to produce better foods, such as Berry Soup and Jam Pastries. These recipes essentially turn one berry into more food units with the addition of inedible ingredients like Flour. They also have a higher quality and give greater speed and production buffs to your Whiskers. There are currently no food variety buffs, so the best quality food that can be sustained should be pursued.
Trade
Berries have little value (5 coins per berry) so even great surpluses may not be an effective way to pay taxes.
Production
Woodcutting
Wild growing trees can be cut with a Woodcutter. Natural patches of trees appearing on the map are consumed once harvested and never regrow.

Farming
Trees are available to plant on Farms starting at the beginning of the game. They are an easy crop to grow with many areas amenable to growing them. As a native crop, they use little in the way of soil nutrients and are more tolerant than non-native crops like Wheat.

Farmed trees are harvested by a Farm and a Woodcutter is not required.

If more Logs are desired from existing crops, consider activating the stump pulling policy that can yield additional Logs when clearing stumps at the cost of Approval.

Usage
Trees yield Logs when chopped down, which can be converted to Fuel at the Charcoal Furnace and Planks at the Sawmill. Trees should be farmed before all available wild trees are exhausted by the Woodcutter.
Guilds

76561198119032229: Added links and images.

Basics
Guilds represent specialization amongst your workforce of Whiskers. Every Whisker will belong to one of the four Guilds. The four Guilds are: Miners, Engineers, Farmers and Explorers.

You will need a mix of Whiskers dedicated to each of the guilds to maximize the efficiency of your colony. Be careful though, the name of each guild can be misleading. For example, Miner's Guild Whiskers prefer working at Ore Furnaces rather than Engineer's Guild Whiskers.

Job Assignments
Guild specializations are important to consider in assigning to Whiskers to work. If you assign a Whisker to work at a building that matches their guild specialization, they will receive a large production speed bonus (+50). Thus, while you can assign Whiskers of any guild to a building in a pinch, it's better to match the Whisker to their preferred work.

If you are unsure which guild is preferred by each building, you can check by selecting a preexisting building or by trying to build a new one. Guild affiliation is also provided in the Buildings pages of this Wiki.

Not every building has a guild preference (e.g., Logistics Hub).

Passive Traits
Guild specialization provides an assortment of passive modifiers to each Whisker, and influences their effectiveness at their jobs. Guild passive traits work at all times, except the production bonus which requires working at an affiliated building. For example, Miner's Guild Whiskers always can carry more, which makes them well suited to construction and logistics work.

Guild members also have preferred food they will seek out in the evenings. Make sure you are providing a variety of food to keep everyone happy.
Changing Guilds
You may find yourself in a position where you would like to swap the guild affiliation of a Whisker. For example, you have a spare Farmer's Guild Craft Master and need a Miner's Guild Craft Master. Instead of waiting for a lucky find on a Whisker Ship, use the School to convert Whiskers from one guild to another. Just be sure to select guild on the teaching interface.

Converting Whiskers between the 4 guilds is important to make sure your workforce matches the available jobs. You may wish to routinely review if you need to make any modifications as you expand.

Helpful Hint: If you have a School or two, you can accept more Whiskers from the Whisker Ship, as you can train them to meet your needs. Stop looking for the "perfect Whisker" and focus on the traits you cannot change.

Basics
Heating, Water, Steam and Piping all make a challenging mix of infrastructure that you will need to provide to your Whisker colony to be able to succeed in the long run.

Your first challenge will be to make sure your Whiskers can stay warm up in the winter using heaters. Early on, you will only be able to use the Campfire and Bonfire, but you will be able to research more technology as the game progresses.

Your next challenge will be to bring water to your Whiskers. They do not need it to drink, but it provides opportunities to refine materials at the Sifting Tower, cook foods at the Soup Kitchen, or provide bathing facilities like the Showers. Water will introduce the concept of piping which you must run throughout your colony, spanning from sources like the Water Pump all the way to where it is needed. You will have to get creative in placing piping, especially if you had not planned for it before. Try building your piping underground to avoid tangled overhead pipes and a lot of supports.

Finally, your Whiskers will discover the power of steam which will allow you to efficiently heat your colony with Steam Radiators, give your Whiskers luxurious baths at the Bathhouse, and speed up your factories with the Steam Engine. All of this will require you to run an additional set of pipes throughout your colony to carry steam from Steam Boilers to wherever it may be needed. In combination with your water pipe infrastructure, it can become a real infrastructure challenge.

Heating
Heating is needed in your colony whenever temperatures reach 10° C or below. The colder it gets, the harder it will be for you to keep your colony heated. You have 4 heating sources you can use that will provide warmth in a radius around them. When placing a heating source, it will display various colors around itself that will show you to what degree it will warm the surrounding area. Below is a chart showing what each color means and the effects, if any, it will have on nearby buildings.

+ Heating Table
Color !! Warmth !! Effect
style="background-color:darkred;" | Dark Red || Very Warm || High resistance to increasing cold
style="background-color:red;" | Red || Warm || Normal Operations/Safe for Whiskers
style="background-color:goldenrod;" | Yellow || Warm || Temps lowering will next effect this area but otherwise safe
style="background-color:blue;" | Blue || Chilly || Slower Production/Possible chilled paws for Whiskers
style="background-color:purple;" | Purple || Very Cold || Slower Production/Possible Illnesses/Machinery Degrades Faster

There are currently 4 heating options for your Whiskers. Additionally, some factories like the Ore Furnace and Blast Furnace heat themselves and a small area around them while in operation. Factory heat sources should not be relied upon to heat your colony as they only produce heat while operating and only during the day (unless you're using overtime). For the most part, you will be using the following heating options.

+ Heating Source Table (at 10° C)
Heating Source !! Total Radius !! Dark Red1 !! Red !! Yellow !! Fuel Capacity
Campfire || 5 || 0 || 3 || 2 || 3 (Click to Refill)
Bonfire || 8 || 1 || 6 || 2 || 6 (Fuel Tender)
Heating Stove || 8 || 2 || 6 || 2 || 8 (Fuel Tender)
Steam Radiator || 9 || 3 || 7 || 2 || 3 (Piped Steam)

1 The "dark red" radius is just part of the overall red radius and does not extend it. It represents extra warmth and more resilience to increasing cold. The extra heat may penetrate rock ground in the case of a Steam Radiator.

<gallery caption="Temperature ranges of the first 3 heating sources when Underground at -10° C" widths="400px" heights="300px" mode="packed"1>
</gallery>
1 This will change depending on the amount of space you are heating, these images were in a 70ish tile space for the test.

As temperatures continue to plummet, the overall radii provided above will shrink by approximately 1, starting at 0° C and continuing as the weather gets colder (Note: More information is needed to determine how temperature is applied to buildings and Whiskers in relation to the temperature overlay screen). This means that placing heating elements throughout your city cannot be planned just at 10° C temperature because buildings that were safe from chilly conditions may no longer be in late winter. Make sure to give yourself some "cushion" by overlapping heating sources. An example of the effects on a campfire from -30° C to 0° C is provided in the image below.

If you find yourself in a pinch, you can place heating sources in "overdrive" on an individual basis via a toggle switch. This will double their fuel consumption but effectively increase their heating radius by 2. This can help stay off the extra cold days if you can sustain the extra fuel consumption. Campfires cannot be put in overdrive.

Farms can continue to function during the winter if they are heated properly, but you may not want to waste the additional fuel. If you choose not to heat Farms, be sure to unassign the associated farmers. They will go to their place of work every day and sit in the snow after harvesting any salvageable crops. This can expose your Whiskers to unnecessary cold while they idle. You will not get an "idle camp" warning when farmers are sitting around during winter.

Water
Water is required at a number of different buildings in your colony. Buildings like Showers, Bathhouse, the Sifting Tower, Chemist, Steam Boiler, and Soup Kitchen all require piped water.

Water systems in the game consist of a simple mix of Water Pumps, Water Pipe, and Water Tanks at a minimum.

You need at least one Water Pump that is pumping water from the sea to create a long-term viable water system. While Water Tanks with unobstructed tanks can technically catch rain water, this only provides a slow, supplemental source of water. A single Water Pump will provide sufficient water for a good number of facilities, so do not worry about constructing multiple trying to get a few Showers online.

The key to a well functioning water system is having a few Water Tanks connected to your water system via Water Pipe. These tanks store water in greater quantities than the small reservoir each facility has within it. This allows your colony to consume water even when your Water Pump isn't working (like at night). You will want a couple of Water Tanks to start and likely will not need too many to create a sufficient "buffer" against water usage spikes.

Outside of these basic component parts, your real challenge will be running Water Pipe throughout your colony. If this is your first colony, you may not have left adequate space for this infrastructure so you may have to make difficult decisions in rearranging your colony or digging underground pipelines. Just be prepared for the fact that bringing water to your Whiskers will take some time and cost you a good chunk of Copper Bars.

Steam
Steam is used at a smaller number of buildings, but its main importance is keeping your colony warmer during the winter. Steam piped from Steam Boilers to Steam Radiators provides a continuous supply of heat that will not drown your Whiskers in smoke. It can also be used to provide luxurious baths at the Bathhouse which is the only bathing facility that can reach 4-star quality when provided with soap. Finally, steam can be used to improve the efficiency of your colony. Rail Boosters speed up your rail carts with a burst of steam and Steam Engines increase factory production rates and elevator speeds.

Whatever you intend to do with steam in your base, you will need, at the very least, a Steam Boiler, Fire Tender, Steam Pipe, and Steam Tanks.

While you can get away with one Steam Boiler for awhile, it is recommended you build 2-3 due to how they provide steam (in bursts as they consume fuel) and because fuel is manually provided by a Fire Tender. You do not want your only boiler to run out of fuel and have to wait on a Fire Tender to bring some fuel over. Unlike the Water Pump, Steam Boilers operate on their own as long as they have piped water and fuel inside.

Much like your water system, you will want some Steam Tanks to buffer any demand spikes or shortages. Steam Tanks are a little trickier to deal with than Water Tanks, so you may want to develop some new placement strategies.

Finally, the most challenging part will be running another set of piping throughout your colony. Unfortunately, Steam Pipe cannot occupy the same space as Water Pipe, so you will have to work around your existing infrastructure. Even more frustrating is the steam input on the Steam Radiator may make replacing other heating sources in dense building clusters difficult.

Don't forget to retire your old Fire Tenders once you have replaced all of your Bonfires and Heating Stoves with Steam Radiators!

Also, keep an eye on your water supply because your steam system is an extra consumer on that system as well. Every Steam Boiler producing steam is drawing water and you may have to revisit your water systems as you power your Whiskers' future with steam.

Basics
Factories, at their basic level, will allow you to refine Resources. There is at least one factory (or food processing facility) that will refine every raw resource into a usable product for the Whiskers. Keep in mind that The Claws have a vested interest in you not doing this and will make your industrialization journey a bit harder. You will face increased industry taxes and be reliant on The Claws for Machinery to keep your factories functioning. Additionally, The Claws will not accept any refined product except Gold Bullion to pay your taxes.

You need to build factories to progress in the game, but you should do so judiciously to avoid running out of Machinery or paying more taxes than you can afford. As the game progresses, you will need to worry less about these factors.

Factories make up production chains, and it can get complicated to understand the interactions between all of the buildings. Consider your production chains to ensure they are operating efficiently and not running into shortages or leaving you with piles of unnecessary materials (especially those you cannot sell).

For example, the Weaver can directly produce woven cloaks from the raw material flax or it can make fabrics from threads which puts it in a production chain. Weavers accepts scissors as a catalyst which means producing copper bars at an Ore Furnace and further refining it at a Coppersmith.

Machinery
Machinery is the lifeblood of your factories. They are required to build every single factory and are consumed over time by your factories. Until you can produce your own (a late game research), you are completely reliant on The Claws to provide Machinery to you. You can obtain them via Supply Ships (eventually disappearing from the cheapest supply option) or as rewards for paying your taxes.

If you want to amass a good stockpile, paying the bare minimum for your taxes will make that task difficult. Larger quantities of Machinery are available at the 125% or 175% tax payment levels. It is in your best interest to use your limited re-rolls to try and locate a reward for Machinery rather than relying on the supply ship. If you need more from the supply ship, keep an eye on the fluctuating amounts of machinery parts they offer. Some packages are better for the price than others.

Make sure you stockpile Machinery for your first few winters. Remember, the only source of Machinery for the winter is the supply ship, and you will be charged their winter surcharge. This can lead to a nasty Spring tax collection event.

Productivity
Factories determine their production speed via a variety of factors, such as:

* the number of Whiskers assigned,
* guild bonuses from assigned workers,
* fulfilling optional production bonus slot requirements,
* the food the Whiskers are eating (varying production bonuses),
* temperature of the factory (cold will slow it down), and
* whether a Steam Engine is providing a boost.

Leverage as many boosts as you need to keep your supply chain functioning smoothly. Consider using a catalyst to increase the output of the facility even further.

Your factories only receive production speed bonuses from Whiskers while they are present in the factory. If a worker is off fetching input materials or delivering output goods, they will not contribute to the production speed at the factory. This is important to consider when you're locating warehouses, housing, etc. If your Whiskers are spending a lot of time traveling, it will reduce the effective productivity of your factories. That is, even if they're producing goods quickly, they won't be producing for as many hours of the day.

This high level of variability can make it difficult to pin down a good ratio of factories when working with multi-step production chains. A good place to start is the theoretical outputs of each factory, but you will still have to adjust. Even something like the uneven distribution of food (some getting high quality and others getting low quality) could throw a wrench in your calculations. You may just want to embrace the imperfection.

Catalysts
All factories have a specific catalyst which will increase their production output by +25 (same for all factories). Generally, there is a theme to a catalyst which can help you predict which set of factories will use which catalyst. For example, every factory in the fiber production chain (Weaver, Flax Spinner, Cotton Gin, Tailor) all use scissors and all of the ore processing facilities (Ore Furnace, Charcoal Furnace, Blast Furnace) use fire tongs.

In order to use catalysts, you must first produce them at factories. Some catalysts are single-purpose and they cannot be used for any other purpose (e.g. scissors). Other catalysts may be used in other supply chains (e.g. rope, oil). Take care in producing catalysts because single-purpose catalysts may be expensive and many cannot be sold. It is highly advised to set production limits on those catalysts to conserve resources and not end up with a warehouse full of scissors you cannot use for quite some time.

When you want a factory to use a catalyst, select the factory and turn on the toggle for using a catalyst. One of the assigned workers will perform a task to go fetch the catalyst (it will state that under their name). Once obtained, the factory will benefit from the catalyst until it is fully consumed. The number of catalysts stored and their consumption status is shown next to the toggle to turn catalysts on/off.

Catalyst usage is fairly slow and a single factory producing a catalyst can support a large number of factories requiring it. For example, one Coppersmith producing scissors can keep a dozen or more Weavers, Flax Spinners, Cotton Gins, and Tailors well stocked. Just be aware that workers assigned to these catalyst-creating facilities may idle a lot, especially if you have production limits set.

Guild Alliances
While factories may appear to be aligned with the Engineering Guild, this is definitely not the case. For example, the fiber production chain is preferred by Explorer's Guild Whiskers and the ore refinement facilities are preferred by the Mining Guild Whiskers. Some of the alignments may not feel intuitive, so be sure to look at the symbol associated with the building before assigning Whiskers.

Where possible, make sure all of your factories are staffed by the appropriate guild for additional production speed bonuses. While any Whisker can be assigned in a pinch (aside from requirements like Scholars and Apprentices), you should strive to match the guild with the factory. You can use a School to realign the guild of Whiskers, if you prefer not to hire more to fill in the gaps.

Craft Master/Apprentices
Many factories will have slots that require a Whisker to be an apprentice, craft master, or a scholar. These requirements come in various configurations such as requiring one to open additional worker slots, all slots requiring these specialties, or an optional specialty slot to boost production.

You may not have the work force that matches the factories you are trying to build. You will need to recruit the skills via Whiskers arriving on ships or use a School to modify the abilities of existing Whiskers.

Remember that the higher skill level of a Whisker also means the higher their demands. A scholar frequently comes with 4-star demands. As such, be sure not to recruit or convert too many of your Whiskers into these specialties. Once trained, a Whisker cannot be untrained. Stick to roughly the number you need for requirement slots and optional slots. There is no bonus for these skills unless noted by the factory in its worker assignment slots.

If you're running short on Whiskers, look for assignment slots that provide large bonus production speed and choose those if you cannot fully staff the building.

Pollution
Any factory that consumes Fuel to produce goods will also produce pollution while it is operating. This includes all of the furnaces which produce substantial amounts of air pollution while operating. The Sifting Tower is a notable exception in that it does not consume Fuel but still produces some pollution.

Pollution creates negative thoughts for your Whiskers based on the amount to which they are exposed (unless immune due to the "can't smell" trait). Currently, pollution will not physically harm your Whiskers, but they will receive negative bonuses to walking speed and production efficiency.

Make sure to locate your polluting facilities downwind and away from your Whiskers to minimize the impacts of your Fuel-consuming factories. If you are unsure of the wind direction for your island, place a Windsock decoration to inform you.

Other buildings also produce pollution, like food preparation buildings and Fuel-powered heating. It may be unintuitive but food preparation buildings should also be similarly located as industry, even though they produce less pollution.

It is impossible to avoid the colony-wide smog created by fuel-powered heating until you unlock Steam Radiators. The additional pollution can and will combine with other sources to exacerbate the situation.

Services are how you keep your Whiskers well fed, squeaky clean, healthy, and happy. Generally, the more services you can provide, the more likely it is that each Whisker will produce more positive thoughts and fewer negative thoughts. Take care of your Whiskers so that you can keep building your Whisker nation.

Dining
Every evening, your Whiskers will seek out a meal on their way home. They will try to find an eating establishment and pick up food that at least meets their expectations. Both the food and their dining experience are evaluated separately. If a Whisker with 4-star expectations eats low-quality food at a high-quality eating establishment, they will complain about the food they ate but still be positive about the dining experience.

Dining Quality
You have 3 options for eating establishments: Warehouses, Cafes and Dining Halls.

Quality
Eating Establishents
0 ☆☆☆☆
Warehouse (any)
2 ★★☆☆
Cafe
4 ★★★★
Dining Hall

You should really work to avoid letting Whiskers snack at your Warehouses. Whiskers eating at Warehouses produce more negative thoughts as a result. In the later game, this could be an indicator they're having difficulty finding food at all. Make sure to check your end of day report periodically for negative thoughts related to being hungry or having eaten at a Warehouse. It might provide clues to improving your dining coverage. Additionally, check your eating establishments at the start of a new day to see if they are exhausting their food supplies or not.

Eating establishments do not have a Whisker limit, but are limited by the number of food items inside. The workers assigned to them are not required to be there at meal time and simply serve in a logistical capacity to go fetch the food items you are allowing to be served there. Keep an eye on what you're serving to avoid Whiskers being forced to eat raw food. Additionally. you may not want your Whiskers consuming lower quality food that you need for your Fine Kitchens.

Food Quality
In addition to the dining quality experience, Whiskers will evaluate the quality of food they eat. They will complain about bland food or raw food, if the food they eat is below their expectations. If it is above their expectations, they will produce positive thoughts.

Again, avoid raw food for your Whiskers once you are able to reliably cook meals. Most will be very unhappy about eating raw food. Focus on providing the highest quality meals you can sustainably produce.

High-quality meals impart bonuses for Whiskers the next day. Meals can improve their speed, production speed, and/or strength. Raw food provides the least bonuses and 4-star food around 10 times as much as raw food. There is one exception: Food provided by The Claws (Hardtack and Ration Meals) will give far less of a bonus than the food quality would otherwise indicate.

Below is the list of foods you can produce or obtain in the game.

Ration Meals || 4-Star ★★★★ || +15 || +15 || +1

Tea
Tea and Fine Tea do not fulfil Whiskers' hunger needs. They do, however, provide additional positive thoughts (2 and 4 respectively). Like food, tea is served in eating establishments.

Bathing
Whiskers are unhappy being filthy and demand facilities in which to clean themselves. If they reach the point of having dirty fur, they will complain through dirty fur negative thoughts. At the beginning of your journey, this is nearly unavoidable because services take a back seat to survival.

Once you have the supplies to splurge on bathing facilities, you should give your Whiskers a few locations to clean up. Like food, they will seek out bathing facilities on their way home. Be aware that unlike a quick stop to grab food, they will linger at bathing facilities. This can become problematic for your Whiskers with long commutes, as they may not make it home before sunrise and risk hunger and tired negative thoughts.

Bathing facilities come in three qualities and are increasingly more difficult to implement. The most difficult being the Bathhouse which requires steam and water be pumped to it. The bathing facilities are listed below.

Quality
Bathing Facilities
Capacity
Requirements
1 ★☆☆☆
Bathing Dock
5 Whiskers
Requires open ocean
2 ★★☆☆
Showers
10 Whiskers
Requires pumped water
3 ★★★☆
Bathhouse
10 Whiskers
Requires pumped water and piped steam

Soap
In order to reach a 4-star bathing facility, you will need to be able to produce soap and distribute it to a 3-star bathing facility with a Luxuries Supplier. Soap is consumed over time so it can be challenging to maintain 4-star bath quality.

All bathing facilities can use soap, but since soap is a very late game research item, you will likely have converted many, if not all, of your bathing facilities to Bathhouses by the time you have a regular supply of soap.

A word of caution on the bathing facilities that consume water and/or steam. The evening rush to bathe will substantially hit your reserves of these resources. Since the workers who would help replenish these resources are also busy bathing, you can run out of materials if you do not have enough Water Tanks and/or Steam Tanks. This can be a big change in thinking, especially when you first start setting up Showers to take over for Bathing Docks.

Medical
Medical is probably one of the areas you will interact with the least. Whiskers rarely get sick (on default settings) and there are a number of ways to keep them healthy.

Simply making sure you avoid hiring unsafe workers and sickly Whiskers will go a long way to ensuring a healthy workforce.

The biggest factor for illness is the winter. Freezing Whiskers risk illness, along with work speed debuffs and negative thoughts, so be sure to provide your Whiskers with proper attire and heat their homes and workplaces where you can.

Should a Whisker get ill, they will seek out a Medical Triage facility to recover in. As long as they make it to the facility, they will recover in one of the 5 available beds.

How fast they recover is governed by a few factors. First, if you have assigned Whiskers to the Medical Triage building, they will speed along the recovery of those in bed. Second, you can deploy either Saline Solution (+60 recovery speed) or Medicine (+150 recovery speed) to speed the process along.

Should you fail to have a place for your Whisker to recover or they cannot reach it on time, you may have to build the other Medical building - the Grave. Remember, you can pick up and move Whiskers for 1 approval point, so spend that point and make sure they get treatment.

When you have an ill Whisker, you will get a warning flag at the top of your screen with a germ symbol on it. It will remain until they're healed, even if they're in the Medical Triage.

Basics
Constructing Civil and Management buildings brings a nascent government to your Whiskers and allows you the ability to implement and abolish policies impacting your Whiskers. These can be powerful and necessary tools to achieving success in running your colony.

Policies
Policies are powerful edicts that generally grant you bonuses in exchange for expending your approval. There are a number of policies available to you and they are grouped by the factions that inspire them. Currently, the available policies come from the Weasels, Whiskers and The Claws.

In order to activate policies, you must first build the Town Hall. This will grant you the ability to adopt up to 2 policies at once and abolish them at your discretion. Later, you can research the Civic Office which will grant you access to activate more policies. Each Civic Office unlocks one additional policy slot.

Most policies will need to be purchased with a large number of approval points prior to their first use. After that, each activation of the policy while it is adopted and active will cost the stated amount if approval (if any). For example, if you're using the "Stump Pulling" policy, every time a Whisker pulls a stump for extra wood, you will be charged approval points until you run out. Each time a policy costs approval points, an animation will show at the bottom left of the screen where active policies and weather are listed.

A list of the current available policies is below.

+ List of Policies
Policy !! Faction !! Cost Per Use !! Description
Lift with your Back || Weasels || 1 || Whiskers can carry 2 more resources
Night Construction || Weasels || 2 || Building constructions continues by candlelight.
Strip Mining || Weasels || 2 || Mining speed doubled. 20% chance to lose mined resources.
Stump Collection || Weasels || 4 || Pulling tree stumps provides a chance to provide extra wood when woodcutting.
Stone Eyes || Claws || 1 || Speed boosts from passing statutes are increased and last twice as long.
Eureka Moments || Claws || 6 || Research labs occasionally produce an extra free science.
Piecework Trinkets || Claws || 6 || Whiskers use their spare time after work to make sellable trinkets.

Approval
Approval or Approval points is a currency that can be freely expended on policies and recruiting Whiskers. It is replenished daily based on the difference between the total positive thoughts of your Whiskers versus the total negative thoughts.

While Approval is tied to your successful leadership, it can be expended to zero daily without consequence. Do not be afraid to use it.

Expending Approval to zero well before the end of the work day may impact your policy strategy. With no available approval points to spend, policies can no longer activate. Policies like "Piecework Trinkets" can cause these issues.

Having more Whiskers will increase the amount of Approval you can earn daily and the maximum you can store because each additional Whisker will add to your total positive and negative thought count. It is not unusual to have thousands of of Approval points as your colony grows into a Whisker nation.

Production Management
Constructing the Management Office will allow you to control production limits of any resource in your colony. Setting limits at this building will automatically pause further production at any building making that resource when its limit is hit. This may initially sound crazy as you are trying to stockpile food for winter and scrape together resources to pay the next tax bill. Why on earth would you want to limit yourself?

There are a few key reasons to set production limits. The first is the limitation on storage. Buildings left to produce uncontrolled can often make more goods than your supply chains or Whiskers can consume. This can lead to a warehouse full of low-value Berries or a Mining Camp going idle as it complains about nowhere to store materials.

A key strategy is to make sure your production limits reflect what you want to store and what you can store. Try setting up a warehouse to just accept Berries and simultaneously set a production limit to the maximum storage of that warehouse. Now, when your warehouse space for Berries is full, your Whiskers will go take a government-mandated break until enough are sold or consumed.

The other reason to set production limits is resource consumption rates. As your industry churns through supplies, it is not aware that you're running low on something or that you were planning to use it in another way. For example, you likely don't want all of your Copper Bars inadvertently consumed making Scissors for your Weavers. By setting a production limit, you can ensure your Weavers have enough Scissors but that your Copper Bars are also still around for other projects.

Not everything may need a production limit, but it is helpful to revisit your production limit screen periodically to adjust as needed.

Basics
Every Whisker you recruit to your colony will require a house eventually. Whiskers sleeping outside will produce significant negative thoughts about it. They will also not be shielded from the harsh elements, especially during winter.

In the beginning, you will be reliant on sheltering Whiskers in Stone Shelters and Log Cabins based on your limited starting resources and space to build. Once you get going, you will be able to build better quality houses.

Be sure to build more houses than you currently need so that you're ready for the next Whisker ship. If you're not sure how many empty houses you have available, you can put your cursor over your Whisker count on the top menu bar. It will then display Whiskers versus available housing.

Housing Quality
Whiskers need housing that at least matches their desired expectations.

If you give them a house that exceeds their expectations, they will produce additional positive thoughts. If you give them a house that is below their expectations, they will produce negative thoughts related to subpar housing.

Housing is available in the following qualities.

Quality
Types of Housing
0 ☆☆☆☆
Stone Shelter
1 ★☆☆☆
Log Cabin
2 ★★☆☆
Plank Abode, Plank Blockhouse, Plank Rowhouse
3 ★★★☆
Stone Abode, Stone Blockhouse, Stone Rowhouse
4 ★★★★
See note below

4-star quality houses are not yet available. You may provide Bedding and Furniture to a 3-star house via a Luxuries Supplier to increase positive thoughts by up to 4. This effect on the house is temporary as Bedding and Furniture functions like catalysts in Factories and decay over time.

Occupancy
Two Whisker traits will cause problems with using blockhouses and rowhouses. Whiskers that snore will inflict the disturbed sleep negative thought on the other occupant of the house. Loner Whiskers will be upset about their lack of solitude. Make sure to build single occupant homes if you have these Whiskers in your colony.

Upgrading
Some housing can be upgraded in place to the next tier of housing of the same type as long as you have sufficient resources and the associated building researched.

This can be done by selecting a house and looking for the upgrade button on the pop-up menu. Once pressed, the house will automatically upgrade to the next tier over a few seconds and the resources will be deducted from storage. Whiskers are not required to complete the upgrade construction.

Single occupancy houses cost 13 resources of the next tier to upgrade. A Log Cabin will cost 13 Planks to upgrade to a Plank Abode and then 13 Cut Stone to upgrade to a Stone Abode.

Double occupancy houses cost 21 resources to upgrade.

Stone Shelters cannot be upgraded and must be replaced by other housing.

Should you upgrade or rebuild?
Short answer: Upgrade.

Unless you want to move your housing or are in dire need to recover some incremental resources otherwise lost in upgrading, there is no good argument against just using the upgrade button.

The tradeoff is that you will not receive back the differential cost for sunk resources. For example, a Log Cabin costs 5 logs (converts to 25 planks). Upgrading it to a Plank Abode costs 13 planks but you lose the 5 logs. This makes the total cost effectively 38 planks. If you built a new Plank Abode, it costs 21 planks. Keep in mind this is the largest difference in resources for any house upgrade and you still have to "pay" the construction costs of time and Whiskers assigned to build the new house. You are also paying the opportunity cost of not just assigning those builders to a Sawmill or to gather logs. You will also have to micromanage rebuilding houses to prevent leaving Whiskers homeless in the process.

Effectively, this means rebuilding for the resource conservation is niche. It is included here because it may be a tactic to consider on harder difficulties or in extreme circumstances.

If you're not sure how many houses you have available versus Whiskers, you can put your cursor over your Whisker count on the top menu bar.

Occupancy
Houses only allow one or two Whiskers to live in them. Only the rowhouses and blockhouses allow two Whiskers to live in them. This additional occupancy comes at the price of more resources to construct and 2 additional tiles in size (5 versus 3, albeit in different configurations)

A Log Cabin will cost 13 planks to upgrade to a Plank Abode and then 13 stone to upgrade to a Stone Abode.

Double occupancy houses cost 21 resources to upgrade.

Stone Shelters cannot be upgraded and must be replaced by other housing.

Should you upgrade or rebuild?

Short answer: Upgrade

Basics
Railroad systems allow your Whiskers the opportunity to travel much faster than their little feet can carry them, even over a Stone Path. This is vitally important as your Whisker colony grows into a Whisker nation. Resources and farmland will require them to travel further and building railroads can help them reach those locations faster.

All you need are a few Rail Segments and two Rail Stations to get started. Slap a cart down and watch your Whiskers ride to their destination.

Placement
Placing rail is much like placing any pathways. You can lay down multiple segments in a straight line and will have to pay additional costs for any needed support Logs.

Where things get a little bit different are that you cannot create intersections (no T-shaped railroads), and you can create sloped tracks by raising or lowering elevation while trying to place a long track.

You may place any number of Rail Stations on your tracks, but you need a minimum of two for your Whiskers to even consider using your railroad system. They have to have somewhere to go, right?

Only one train cart (carrying 12 Whiskers maximum) will run on any given rail system and will operate automatically. The cart will wait a few moments at each Rail Station before moving onto the next. If you add too many stops, your Whiskers may have to wait a long time for the next cart to arrive.

Physics and Steam
Railroad systems are subject to some level of in-game physics such as friction on the track. If you are building small railroad systems or ones with frequent stops, you may never notice that your carts are slowing down between stops. Each time a cart stops at a Rail Station, it gets a little boost of speed when it gets on its way again.

If you are planning to use railroad systems to cross large distances (50+ segments), you will need to plan accordingly. This is where steam may come in handy. The Rail Booster allows you to apply a significant single-direction speed boost to your passing carts, both fixing the friction problem and decreasing transit time.

You may use more than one Rail Booster on a line (remember to duplicate for the return trip or between each station) to achieve increased speeds. There are diminishing returns on speed enhancement, so your dreams of sending a Whisker to the moon won't be happening.

Cost
Before you start building railroads, it is important to take note of their significant cost. At 1 Iron Bar and 1 Plank for each Rail Segment, the cost can be extraordinarily high when first unlocked. Make sure you build a sufficient supply of resources before you get started.

Don't forget to calculate in the cost of Rail Stations and Rail Boosters (and the necessary Steam Pipes). All of these cost Iron Bars too!

Support costs can also become a concern. Crossing waterways with rail can get extremely resource-intensive. Remember to check out the Masonry tab as Stone Archways can help reduce the cost of Logs at the price of Cut Stone.

Congestion
Whiskers are happy to queue up at a Rail Station if they think it is their fastest route to a location. Since a cart can only hold 12 Whiskers, this can lead to long lines of idle Whiskers if you are not careful.

For the most part, Whiskers will choose the nearest Rail Station that gets them to their destination. If the train station is full and there is another train station nearby, they will queue up at the nearby station. Whiskers may navigate to the first station before realizing the congestion and picking the alternative option. Keep this in mind when trying to solve congestion issues.

You can also consider speeding up the rail line with Rail Boosters to reduce wait times or limiting the reasons Whiskers need to use a particular line (e.g., fewer job assignments on the other side).

76561198119032229: Added images

The Basics
In the Resource Extraction tab at the bottom, you can find the Farm building and the farm tool. The farm tool is used to create fields for the farmers to work through the Farm building.

Nutrients and Fertility
The term "nutrients" refers to how rich the actual tile is (or can be), while "fertility" is related to the crops themselves. Using the farming tool to move over various tiles, you'll find a section displaying X%/Y%. This is the actual tile fertility level (referred to as nutrients to make it distinct from the plant based fertility) which will play the largest role on growing most crops. Fertility is the actual expected output of a tile if a crop is planted on it in its current state. Fertility varies from crop to crop and can still be impacted afterwards by things such as pollution.
The nutrient recovery rate is roughly 8% to 10% per day on normal difficulty. Tiles recover nutrients whenever there is nothing actively growing on the tile. Nothing else plays a role, as even setting the crop type to fallow is just a way to ensure nothing get planted but is otherwise identical to no field existing in the first place.

Growth time
Growth times are a convenient 5% or 10% of a full year, taking the evening into consideration (translating to 864 seconds/1.6 days and 1728 seconds/3.2 days, respectively at the current 32 days in a year). Berries, Flax, and Mushrooms grow at 5%, while all other crops grow at 10%.

Winter
There is no actual winter as we know it, instead most crops rapidly die (90% death within 20-30 seconds, the rest following shortly after) when exposed to freezing temperatures (0 Celsius). This has the upside that if you warm the farm above that point, you can continue to grow crops all year round. Exceptions are Flax, Berries, and Trees, which stop growing at 0 Celsius but do not ever actually die, just like their wild counterparts. However, it may be best to let the field rest and recover nutrients in winter depending on what you are growing and the fact that most heat sources tend to cause harmful pollution. Speaking of pollution...

Rocks, light, and pollution
Rocks and pollution both cause a direct reduction in fertility (not nutrients) ranging from 50% to 100% fertility loss at 100% rock/pollution level. It is unclear at this time if having both results in an additive or multiplicative effect on fertility, as we could not find a farming Whisker willing to "harm my precious crops like that." Notable exceptions are Flax, which only takes a 20% fertility hit at 100% rock level, and Trees, which only take 25% fertility hit at 100% pollution.

The only light source in this world comes from the sky as far as the plants are concerned, so campfires and other fire sources will *NOT* work as substitute light. All crops have a minimum light level to grow (usually 75%) but it is unclear at this time what effect going below that has on fertility, growing speed and nutrient recovery, if any.

More things to consider
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are special in several ways. For starters, they do not suffer from rockiness at all and do not need any nutrients (though interestingly they will use it up if you fertilize their tiles anyway). Cold and pollution works similar to the other crops. But the final point is the biggest difference: they cannot stand sunlight. The way sunlight works is that every tile exposed to an open sky has 100% sunlight and every tile away from it reduces it by roughly 1/8th. Meaning that you need to be at least 8 tiles away from it in a direct line in order to grow mushrooms without them suffering damage. A good use for that buffer space is putting down warehouses and Farm buildings for your future mushroom farm.

How many farms can a farm farmer farm, when a farmer farms farms?
So how much work can a farmer handle? In short: about 72 tiles for 2 workers of the Farmers Guild affiliation in 1 farm building for the following crops: Cotton, Wheat, Tea Leaves, and Peppers. And about 36 tiles for the following crops: Berries, Flax, Mushrooms, and Trees.

The reason for this is that the 72 tile crops take 10% of a year to grow while being fairly fast to fully process at 50 base seconds per tile. This includes plant, 2 harvest actions, and clearing of the leftover material. This number is also before factoring in bonuses to work speed such as Farmers Guild affiliated mice gaining a 50% bonus from their guild. The others can maintain about half for 2 different reasons that have a similar end result: Berries, Flax, and Mushrooms only take 5% of a year to grow while still taking 50 base seconds to harvest, so a farmer can only get half as much work done before the first plant is ready for another round of attention. Trees, meanwhile, require 34 rather than 14 seconds to do each of the (usually) 2 harvest actions per tile, bringing the total process time to 90 seconds. So they need almost twice as long to fully process a tile and thus farmers only get half as many tiles processed before the first one is ready for another round of attention.

Small field vs. traditional farming
Say you have made a nice 12 wide, 6 deep section to farm Cotton in. The simple thing would be to designate it as a field, select it as Cotton, and get to work, right? Wrong! Each field will move between stages as 1 entity to avoid cluttering the various tiles into a weird mass of various stages. This means tiles that have been harvested will not be planted until all tiles in the same plot are done. This results in up to 71 tiles waiting for the last to be harvested before any are planted again. To make matters worse, planting 72 tiles is a lot quicker than harvesting them so your farmers will idle during growing and be swamped during harvest time.

The better way to treat your sweet 12 wide, 6 deep section of prime farming ground is to split it into 4 portions of 3 wide, 6 deep (or any other subdivision you prefer). Your farmers will harvest and replant each section one at a time and get it growing again while they work on the other sections. Doing it this way will have 3/4th of the farmland growing while 1/4th is getting processed and will eliminate or minimize worker idle time after the first harvest round is done.

Fertilizer
Fertilizer is a product that can be made at the Sifting Tower from potash after it is mined from the ground in the same way you would mine metals such as copper or iron. The research to actually produce fertilizer is fairly late into the tech tree. Overpaying taxes to 175% is an often easier and currently the only infinite method of obtaining fertilizer as a reward from The Claws. Once a field has the fertilize toggle turned on, any staffed Farm within range will have their workers retrieve fertilizer and begin applying it to the field. The fertilizer itself is consumed 1 at a time whenever a worker finishes applying it to a tile. Each one will add 200 charges of 1% nutrients to a stockpile tracked invisibly in the farmhouse itself (saving the leftover for the next tile). Applying fertilizer will result in the worked tile immediately setting the current nutrients to 200% and raising the max nutrients by about 6% to 8% each time fertilizer is applied, up to a max of 100% (max nutrients refers to the amount a tile will recover to on its own). This is a great way to create reasonably fertile fields that will continue to be usable even without further use of fertilizer.

Dreaded beaches
Spooky WIP

The impact the rock toggle has on non-rock behavior
In the past, the toggle would unintentionally result in all tiles of a field being cleared of leftover plant matter before any of them would be planted, requiring the mice to visit each tile twice as often. This has since been patched out in patch 19 and the toggle is now safe to stay on.

Fallow fields
Setting fields to fallow ensures nothing gets planted after the next harvest. This can be useful to ensure that nutrients can recover, pollution can dissipate away, or rocks can be be fully removed. In effect, "fallow" is a command to treat the tile as non-farmland for a while, as the only time when tiles will not recover nutrients is when something is actively growing. Fully grown plants recover nutrients at the same rate as fallow and non-farmland.
