[[Ore Furnace]] and [[Blast Furnace]] are the two [[Factories]] which use fuel as an input.

Fuel is also used as an input by following [[Fishing and Food Processing]] buildings: [[Tea Roaster]], [[Smokery]] and [[Soup Kitchen]].

The [[Water, Heating and Piping]] buildings [[Bonfire]], [[Heating Stove]] and [[Steam Boiler]] need fuel to function and a [[Fire Tender]] is needed to distribute fuel to these buildings.

Fuel cannot be used to satisfy [[Demands]] from the Tax Collector, but can be used to statisfy the Pirate Blockade demands, or sold to the Smuggler.

The Charcoal Furnace is the first building you can research that will allow you to produce [[fuel]]. This is an essential product for numerous buildings and is far more efficient at heating in winter than campfires.

The Charcoal Furnace produces 3 fuel for every 2 logs consumed. It is fairly slow at producing fuel, so multiple Charcoal Furnaces will likely be required to satisfy your colony needs.

Luckily, this building does not require apprentices or craft masters so it easier to scale. It will, however, be an incredible drain on your log supply, especially in winter when wood harvesting is at its lowest.

Charcoal Furnaces will likely not be able to keep up with your fuel needs during winters and you inevitably will need to stockpile fuel during the other seasons to survive winter.

You do not need to heat Charcoal Furnaces during the winter. They produce enough heat to keep themselves warm and a very small area around them. They are not substitutes for heaters in your industrial areas.

Charcoal Furnaces produce an enormous amount of pollution and will quickly expose Whiskers to nauseating levels of pollution if not properly placed. This can really ramp up your winter season negative thoughts which are already increasing just due to the cold. It is essential you locate these away from your colony and downwind as well (use a wind sock decoration piece to discover wind direction if you do not already know the prevailing wind direction). You may also want to consider an Earthworks project to extend some land into the sea to move these just a little further away from your colony.

Given the importance of fuel, do consider staging local Warehouses and/or drop off points for your Charcoal Furnaces so they can be as efficient as possible.

Charcoal Furnaces use [[Fire Tongs]] as a catalyst which are made at the Coppersmith. Since producing these requires bronze, you may not have access to this catalyst for awhile. Even when you do, its cost may not be one worth paying while spending bronze on further research.
