Description
The technology to focus a chaotic bit of matter into a well-defined, directed beam of atoms has been around for decades, but the next generation of particle accelerators employs pulsed lasers or electron afterburners within a plasma to transfer vast energies to the target particles. This reduces the size and energy requirement for accelerators dramatically; the kilometer-sized linear colliders and loops of today will soon fit in our labs and spacecraft. The applications are many: Compact particle accelerators can be used in propulsion systems to trigger desired nuclear reactions. As weapons, they can wreak havoc on electronics and soft targets, but they will initially only be useful at extremely close range. Eventually, we may be able to use them in space-based colliders to help produce a hugely powerful energy storage medium - antimatter.
