Summary
Military leaders discard terrestrial notions of command in favor of a new organizational paradigm.
Description
Perhaps the earliest conflict in space was not between two nations but between two branches of the armed forces, the air force and the navy. Air forces made the initial claim on the domain, treating it as a slightly higher extension of their role in the air. But as launches evolved into missions and then into long-term deployments, spacecraft become spaceships, and different routines take hold. Officers must stand watch; crew must live and work together for months or even years. But shipboard life doesn't fully mirror that of wet navies, either, with ships laid out like buildings and long periods of null gravity. Our officers and crew are learning and adapting, building new tactics and procedures, and a new culture.

Quote
"Conflict in space doesn't have an exact analogue in terrestrial warfare, although our instructors keep trying to explain it like it does. Armored warfare where the tanks are all sliding around on ice? A submarine engagement with nowhere to hide? Air combat where there's no gravity to overcome, or air to bank against? Trying to come up with a universal metaphor will lead to wrong assumptions and broken ships. Teach the physics and the decision sets they imply. Our crews can handle it."
