Pipes themselves are completely non-solid and can be placed in the same square as any other block. They will not interact with any blocks, machines or pixels (solid/liquid/gas) except for the Pump and the Liquid Vent. When a continuous Pipe is run between these two machines it will transfer Water (or other liquids) picked up by the Pump to the Liquid Vent where it will be deposited.
Pipes require (at least one) Pump to take liquid in, and (at least one) Liquid Vent to allow liquid out.

The only liquid that cannot be transported by pipes is lava.
Pipes themselves are on a completely separate layer and can be placed in the same square as any other block. They can pass through any material, including Indestructible terain.

Pipes can be connected to multiple Pumps and Liquid Vents at a time and the inputs and outputs will be shared throughout. If more than one type of liquid is pumped in the pipe system, it will distribute them evenly across all outputs. Use separate systems for each liquid instead.
The only exception is that they may not pass through Artifact rooms.

Unlike every other player-placed item, Pipes can only be removed with the specific Pipe Remover tool which can be found under the Building tab.
Lava is too hot to be carried in pipes. All other liquids can be carried.

When Pipes are on the same tile as another player-placed block, they will always be hidden behind that block unless you are have Pipe, Pump, Liquid Vent or Pipe Remover equipped.
Pipes can only be removed by selecting the Pipe tool, and right-clicking on the Pipe you want to remove.

Pipes are used to move liquids around your factory.

Mechanics

Pipes require (at least one) Pump to take liquid in, and (at least one) Liquid Vent to allow liquid out.

Pipes themselves are on a completely separate layer and can be placed in the same square as any other block. They can pass through any material, including Indestructible terain.

The only exception is that they may not pass through Artifact rooms.

Lava is too hot to be carried in pipes. All other liquids can be carried.

Pipes can only be removed by selecting the Pipe tool, and right-clicking on the Pipe you want to remove.

Tips

Pipes cannot cross; if they do, the two networks are joined, and any Pump on either pipe will feed any Liquid Vent on either pipe.

Pipes can be connected to multiple Pumps and Liquid Vents at a time and the inputs and outputs will be shared throughout. If more than one type of liquid is pumped in the pipe system, it will distribute them evenly across all outputs. Use separate systems for each liquid instead, or be prepared to filter your liquids at each vent!

Pipes that run behind terrain or blocks are not visible except when the Pipe tool is selected.
