Overview

The Thermal Buffer stores temperature — both heat and cold — and transfers that energy to buildings which consume it.

Buildings such as the Pyro Dispenser, the Burner Belt and the Smelter consume heat to operate, while buildings such as the Condenser and the Snowmaker consume cold to operate.

Mechanics

Thermal Buffers will absorb heat energy from both Fire and Lava, and will absorb cold from Snow.

When in direct contact with Lava, a large amount of heat (250 units) is transferred to the buffer, and the Lava is consumed.

Indirect heating through Fire transfers significantly less heat (40% chance to add 1), but does not consume the source of that fire.

When in direct contact with Snow, cold is transferred to the buffer (-20 units), and a large amount of Snow is consumed.

Tips

Fire can come from the Flamethrower or the Pyro Dispenser. It also rises as occasional sparks from pools of Lava, and is given off whenever burnable items (such as Residue or Vines) are burned.
