Religion goes beyond just worship - the gods exist, and can be the cause of your prosperity, or your downfall. On completion of any temple, you must dedicate it to one of the gods.
Once dedicated, you can consult with the god of your choice, where you will be given divine tasks. Completion of Divine Tasks rewards you with
Favor, which in turn is used to research new buildings and crop types.
You can make an offering of
Favor to any god in a Small Temple, which will provide various
bonuses to relevant buildings around it:
- Jupiter - +3
Happiness in a 5 tile radius. - Ceres - +1 output to the 3 nearest farms, vineyards, and orchards in its radius.
- Mars - +25% damage to the 3 nearest defense towers in its radius.
- Neptune - +1
Fish yields to the 5 nearest fishing buildings in its radius. - Vulcan - +1 output to the 5 nearest fire based industry buildings in its radius.
In Large Temples, you have the option to throw a Festival to gain
Favor. Festivals require multiple base and luxury food types, and increase
Happiness in the area, boosted by adjacent Forum Tiles.
Lastly, you need to consider God Honor, a measure of their satisfaction. Fall under the “Expected” mark, and the gods will start to get furious with you, which can lead to disaster for your city. Building temples - especially Large and Grand Temples - will help bring the Current Level up to meet demand.
