Component:mk-610-beam-turret
In Game Description
The Mk610 Particle Beam functions as a close-range 'knife fighting' weapon for heavy warships, capable of stripping away armor and incinerating the delicate insides of warships, but its short-range and damage falloff means the weapon is best used when the host warship is closing on a target. A mild recharge time and immense requirement for power also means this weapon needs judicious use to be effective.

Lore
The 610 'Zero Point', named for the high level of accuracy if the turret doesn't get jostled about from the host ship doing maneuvers. Not a laser cannon, by the way, but actually a particle cannon loading from canisters containing ionized gas particles. The 'Zero Point' was actually going to be our secret weapon against the Venumans before the Venuman Conquest just sort of fizzled out like a dying lightbulb, so the concept of the Zero Point just sat around in some dusty binder.
I guess I get it. We went from have[sic] a designated arch-nemesis to nothing. Nobody knew what to do after all that- the Conference just sat around, Venumanologists had nothing to argue about, and armament manufacturers especially had no plan. 'Have dog, will hunt' except there was nothing to hunt and everybody just wanted to go home.
By the way, I'm serious about the 'Venumanologist' thing. There was a whole division under the Conference whose job was to divine the enemy's intentions and read the entrails, and they were getting salaries that rivaled commission captains. Not /one/ of them could notice that the Venumans were about to collapse on themselves and a lot of manpower, resources, and development power was spent preparing for a war that would probably last for another few decades. If it didn't result in victory, I have a good feeling that all of them would have had an AN-CAR slapped into their hands and sent off to the frontlines. Instead, they got folded into the Naval Office.
