In Game Description
Long-wave early warning radars provide tremendous range but terrible accuracy, and have fallen out of use by the Alliance over a century ago. These radars can provide continuous dwell on an area of space, and while they can't provide a track worth firing on[1], they enable Protectorate fleets to maneuver with purpose and pick engagements they can win. Be warned that due to its design this radar has enormous side- and back-lobes and can be detected from ELINT at great range.
The R550 does not provide continuous scan like a search radar, and must be manually directed at an area to search.

TO: PROTECTORATE NAVAL COMMAND
FROM:OTDEL
Constantine, we have secured a stock of R550s dating back to the Deshima Blitz and have put technicians to work on adjusting the mountings and weight to fit with our mounting system. These radars are ancient by modern day standards but the Otdel agrees that it will give us an enormous advantage over the Alliance, so long as you understand that it's not a tactical ship-board radar and you should not expect it to be used for anything other than detection. Expect to use these on any clippers you have available and ready for refit.
Ithaca Dynamics, surprisingly, still has components in production for the R550 and we have brokered a deal to have additional components distributed among the fleets. We don't expect the Alliance Naval Office to counter this device given its age and their pride on pushing the envelope, but don't let your guard down; seeing further is a gateway to tunnel vision.
Good hunting.
