The Backbone

The Backbone is temperate, hospitable, and resource-rich, which is what drew the first colonists toward Way-9352, or as it would later be called, the Wayback System. The faction that rules this planet, while typically referred to as just The Backbone, also calls themselves the "Unbent." They see themselves as the true rulers of the system and have turned their homeworld into a massive military industrial complex. They do not seem to have any hidden or ulterior motives; they are very forward about their intentions of one day ruling the Wayback.

Rulers of the Backbone come to power via a complicated election process wherein candidates must sacrifice a piece of themselves physically. This ensures that they are all-in for fulfilling the role, and also that they do the best for the very constituents their crippled bodies must not depend upon. Xiao Xiao, the representative of this faction during the player's excursion to the system, apparently gave up her arms for this purpose.
