Single-player runs can be played on three difficulties: Easy, Normal and Hard. Easy and Normal are open from the start; Hard unlocks once you complete a run on Easy or Normal.

Difficulties

Difficulty What changes
Easy
  • 10 extra starting health (20 instead of 10)
  • More steps before each boss
  • Gold and Diamond items drop more often
Normal Nothing: this is the standard game.
Hard
  • Bosses have an extra item (their "Hard item", shown in the compendium; the Gauntlet page lists them for the Gauntlet bosses)
  • Yellow enemies spawn
  • Nights are longer and days are shorter
  • Gold and Diamond items drop less often

Rewards

  • Boss list: beating a boss once on Normal unlocks its lore in the boss list, and beating it once on Hard shows how many times you have won against it.
  • Weapon mastery: completing a run on Hard with a weapon awards that weapon's Hard mastery (see Weapon Mastery).
  • Achievements: Patch #8 added Steam achievements for the difficulties that are now called Normal and Hard.

Old names

Patch #16 renamed the difficulties. Only the names changed; each one plays exactly as before.

Before Patch #16 Since Patch #16
Normal Easy
Hard Normal
Very Hard Hard

Older patch notes, challenge descriptions and pages on this wiki may still use the old names.
