Abilities
Big-headed ants use basic attack by biting.

Supersoldiers can stun and knock enemies back. They may rarely stun themselves due to their overly large heads.

Supersoldiers can lift small enemies in the air and instantly kill them one at a time. This ability can't be used on enemies with less than 40 HP.
Trivia
* In real life, only 8 species of big-headed ants can produce supersoldiers naturally. Scientists have successfully forced other species of big-headed ants, including Pheidole morrisii, to do so by over-exposing the larvae to juvenile hormone. In Cold Blood, it can be inferred that the first encounter with fire ants has caused an unusual surge of juvenile hormone in the local big-headed ant colony.
Settings
Your leafcutter ant colony must race against another established leafcutter colony in leaf harvesting.

The level starts during the day.

The forest floor is covered with harvestable plants. They give a total of 34455 food. Only leaves gathered from harvestable plants count toward the objective.

You must choose either taunt or stun majors before playing the level. You start with 19/ 13/ 7/ --/ -- minor brood tiles.
Non-player colony
You can also beat the level by eliminating the enemy queen.

The enemy colony only has access to taunt majors. They are kept around the queen and are only deployed to escort the gathering groups.

The enemy colony randomly chooses amongst specific locations on the surface to gather leaves. It will retreat after it has taken enough casualties. It will return to the contested area and bring majors along after 60 seconds.

The reinforcement will briefly follow your most recently placed marker. It is prevented from gathering and lingers around for 60 seconds. The enemy colony will move the entire reinforcement to a new harvesting location before sending the majors back.

Stun majors come from a spawner in the enemy nest to protect the queen when the nest is invaded. They leave when you are outside. Some stun majors stay on the surface to protect the gathering groups.

The enemy colony doesn't invade your nest. Attacking waves actually come from the previously mentioned spawner. They appear and invade your nest after you have gathered 9000/ 9000/ 9500/ 10000/ 11500 leaves and are ahead of the enemy colony. The inbetween time is 2 minutes. Attacking waves only consist of stun majors.
Notable enemies
Other enemies are on the same side and are hostile to the ants.

Green rove beetles and small velvet worms live in your nest.

Surface enemies don't invade your nest during the day.

Harvestmen, small velvet worms and spiny devil bush crickets roam the forest floor all day. Trap-jaw ants move along specific paths on the surface and gather any food on the way.

Jumping spiders and leaf-mimic praying mantises only appear on the surface during the day.

Green rove beetles and large velvet worms only appear on the surface at night.

Rove beetles, bush crickets and trap-jaw ants can sometimes invade your nest at night.

Challenge

Phorid flies appears every 6 minutes 30 seconds at specific locations on the surface.

*Black garden ants (Lasius niger) were replaced with black silky ants because the latter are hosts of the chosen slave-maker ants. They were removed from the game completely from version 0.05 onward.
Setting
Your gene-thief ant colony must survive the final challenge by the male scientist.

Royal Jelly is dropped in your formicarium near at the start of each test. Royal Jelly can be gathered even when food storage is full and it is fed directly to the queen.

You can spend 5000/ 15000/ 50000 Royal Jelly to make your ants more resistant to each testing equipment. Your ants become immune and gain beneficial effects after you have upgraded the resistances to level 3.

*Acid resistance: Affected ants can leave acidic trail behind them to damage contacting enemies over time. Damage is venom.

*Laser reflectivity: Affected ants can reflect the laser onto nearby enemies.

*Electric grounding: Affected ants can discharge electricity once to damage nearby enemies. Damage is physical.

*Heat resistance: Affected ants are ablaze and can damage nearby enemies over time. Damage is physical.

You can only have up to 300 brood tiles before attempting the challenge.
Notable enemies
Enemies are on the same side. The testing equipments can affect any creatures.

The testing equipments inflict very high true damage, force the remaining enemies to invade your nest and evaporate any leftover Royal Jelly. Equipment choice is randomized. Range and strength of each test increases over time.

The male scientist uses only 1 equipment in the first phase (4 tests). Enemies are dropped in your formicarium between each test and the choice is randomized.

*Choice 1: Bombardier beetles

*Choice 2: Beach tiger beetles, nothern dune tiger beetles, six-spotted tiger beetles and African tiger beetles

*Choice 3: Beach wolf spiders, sand bear wolf spiders, jumping spiders, magnolia green jumpers, green lynx spiders and huntsman spiders

If you keep most of your soldiers inside, he knocks on the glass to stun and randomly damage any active creatures. This only happens during the first phase.

The male scientist uses 2 equipments in the second phase (3 tests). Leaf-mimic praying mantises and giant African mantises are dropped in your formicarium at the start and at the end of the phase.

The male scientist uses 3 equipments in the third phase (4 tests). He accidentally destroys many containers and drops various enemies in your formicarium at the start. Enemies are randomized among the following creatures.

He stabilizes the equipments and connects 8 feeding tubes to your formicarium. Attacking wave periodically enter your formicarium and invade your nest until the end of the level.

Wave enemies include leafcutter ants, trap-jaw ants, army ants, fire ants, little black ants, big-headed ants, Matabele ants and driver ants.

The equipment combination destroys your surface nest entrance. You lose if you haven't upgraded all resistances to level 3.

The equipments are automatically activated one at a time during the fifth phase. The activation order is exactly the same as the first phase.

The male scientist transforms into a human-ant hybrid. He destroys various containers in the process and drops various enemies in your formicarium. You can encounter all previous enemies, as well as dwarf salamanders, pine woods tree frogs, rainbow lizards, sun spiders and African giant centipedes.

Trivia
* In real life, army ants have four castes: minors, mediae, sub-majors and majors. In the game, sub-majors and mediae are grouped into just mediae because they both act as generic combat units. Either of the two models can be spawned randomly from media brood tiles.

* In real life, army ants can sting. The developers don't implement this in the game to focus on their damage supporting gimmick.

* In real life, army ant majors do release an alarm pheromone from their mandibular glands when they bite. This pheromone attracts nearby army ants to the contested area and further increases their aggression. In the game, the orange pheromone cloud was later changed to red glow for better game performance.

* Army ants have been confirmed to be unplayable as complete colonies because they mostly build bivouacs using their own bodies.

* Beating The Other Foot on any difficulty lets you play as the counterpart colony in custom games.

This page shows the mechanics of colonies.
Mechanics
You can play with 9 different colonies in the entire game. If you choose to play with wood ants, leafcutter ants, fire ants or Matabele ants, you must pick either of the 2 variants.

You can only control a single colony in any levels or custom games. Non-player colonies can use the same mechanics as you can but are controlled by the game. Every colony must be assigned to a number, a color and an underground area.

Non-player colonies and other enemies are always hostile to eachother.

The respective colony is defeated when its queen is dead. Tiles are deleted every 0.5 seconds and return 66% of the building cost. Refunds are modified to reward the victors: larvae, leaves, termites or lignocellulose.
Levels
Behaviors
Non-player colonies in story levels and extra levels are designed to mimic their real-life counterparts. Nanitic workers are always kept inside to do nest jobs.

Non-player colonies check the surface for food and move gathering groups there.

*None: Non-player colonies simply follow instructions and can't respond to anything.

*Old system: Non-player colonies can only check predetermined locations. Gathering groups move to the most recently chosen locations if they can't find any food.

*New system: Non-player colonies can constantly and thoroughly scan their territories for food or danger and move pheromone groups accordingly. Gathering groups remain inside if they can't find any food.

Non-player colonies can only control up to 3 pheromone groups.

*Species with same-sized soldiers: Gathering groups consist of workers and soldiers. Attacking groups only consist of soldiers and usually join them to gather food on the surface.

*Species with different-sized soldiers: Gathering groups consist of workers and / or small soldiers. Attacking groups only consist of large soldiers and are usually kept the around the queen.

Gathering groups attack any enemies on the way when they are tasked with gathering food. Food gathering and attacking is disabled when they are tasked with taking aphids.

Gathering groups will retreat inside after they have taken enough casualties. Attacking is disabled in the process.

Attacking groups are only deployed to invade your nest or to protect gathering groups. Gathering is disabled in the process and is only enabled during retreat.

Non-player colonies can only choose between attacking and retreating in tug-of-war levels. Gathering is always enabled.

Actual players are more decisive and responsive so non-player colonies always need headstart and cheat to stay threatening. Only free-food cheat is available in story levels and extra levels.
Nest building
Non-player colonies have predetermined nest designs. They can decide building order on their own. They can only build hexagon chambers and can't build highways.
You can play with or without other colonies in custom games. You must choose a color and a team for each colony before you start a custom game. You can only have up to 4 colonies and 4 teams in a single custom game.

Some colonies may have different start from story levels and extra levels.
*Leafcutter ant colonies have nineteen-tiled queen chambers.

*Matabele ant colonies must start with some soldier brood tiles.

*Termite colonies have nineteen-tiled queen chambers and must start with some lignocellulose storage tiles and some fungus storage tiles.

You can control temperament of non-player colonies: Docile, Timid, Balanced and Aggressive. It affects their aggressiveness and unit composition.

You can also control how quickly non-player colonies make decision.

You can also control their headstart and cheat frequency: None, Headstart, Underhanded, Cheater, Crooked and Corrupt. Non-player colonies can gain free food over time or spawn units without requiring food or workers. Cheat is disabled when nest invasion is happening.

Non-player colonies aren't affected by upkeep and randomized caverns. You can control whether colonies can enter other nests.
Behaviors
Non-player colonies will keep all units outside to gather food. Nanitic workers only move inside to finish the assigned nest jobs when storage is full and only stay inside permanently after you have played for 30 minutes.

Non-player colonies can only control up to 3 pheromone groups. They can be assigned with gathering food, taking aphids or attacking enemy colonies.

Gathering groups attack any enemies on the way when they are gathering food. Food gathering and attacking is disabled when they are taking aphids.

Attacking groups will be tasked with gathering food and retreat after they have taken enough casualties.

Attack frequency is affected by temperament settings.

*Docile colonies remain in their territories.

*Aggressive colonies immediately and constantly attack the targets.

Non-player colonies can't respond to nest invasions. They can't actively hunt uber creatures or titans either.

Non-player colonies can only choose between attacking and retreating in tug-of-war levels. Gathering is always enabled.
Settings

Gathering groups are kept inside if they can't find any food.

Non-player colonies will choose the weakest colonies in biomass as their targets after they have enough food. Attacking groups either follow their most recently placed pheromone markers or invade their nests. Food and aphid gathering is disabled in the process.

Nest building
Non-player colonies always start with the same predug nest and some resources. They usually work on 2 chambers at once. They upgrade storage and soldiers first and only upgrade workers after everything else has been finished.

Nest design and unit compostition is affected by species choices and temperament settings. They can decide building order on their own. They can only build hexagon chambers and can't build highway.

*Docile colonies have lots of workers.

*Timid colonies have balanced unit compositions.

*Balanced and aggressive colonies have lots of large soldiers.

Gathering groups are kept inside if they can't find any food.

Non-player colonies will choose the weakest colonies in biomass as their targets after they have enough food. Attacking groups either follow their most recently placed pheromone markers or invade their nests. Food and aphid gathering is disabled in the process.

Attacking groups will be tasked with gathering food and retreat after they have taken enough casualties.

Attack frequency is affected by temperament settings.

*Docile colonies remain in their territories.

*Aggressive colonies immediately and constantly attack the targets.

Non-player colonies can't respond to nest invasion. They can't actively hunt uber creatures or titans either.

Settings

They can be asigned with gathering food, taking phids or attacking enemy colonies.

Gathering groups attack any enemies on the way when they are gathering food. Fod gathering and attacking is disabled when they are taking aphids.

They can be asigned with gathering food, taking phids or attacking enemy colonies.

Attacking groups will be tasked with gathering food and retreat after they have taken enough casualties.
*Docile colonies remain in their territories.

*Aggressive colonies immediately and constantly attack the targets.

Non-player colonies can't respond to nest invasion. They can't actively hunt uber creatures or titans either.

Nest design and unit compostition is affected by species choices and temperament settings. They can decide building order on their own. They can only build hexagon chambers and can't build highway.

*Species with different-sized soldiers: Gathering groups consist of workers and/ or small soldiers.

Nest buidling
Non-player colonies have predetermined nest designs. They can decide building order on their own. They can only build hexagon chambers and can't build highway.
Gene-thief ants

Gene-thief ant units are divided into 3 groups: workers, small soldiers and large soldiers. Large soldiers only include leafcutter ant majors and army ant majors. Unit composition is affected by available unit groups.

If they have access to multiple options in the same group, they will choose randomly among the available options and build a chamber for each option.

If large soldiers aren't available, they are replaced with small soldiers. If small soldiers aren't available, they are replaced with workers.
