It’s almost time for Lunar New Year, and the fire ant queen is making her famous New Year's Eve hotpot for her family and friends. Help them find the correct spices in time for dinner, whilst making liberal use of festive firecrackers to clear enemies and shorten your path.
Objectives
* Gather all ingredients before New Year's Eve.

* Gather 50 Szechuan peppercorns.

* Gather 25 fennel seeds.

* Gather 15 chilli flakes.

* Gather 10 star anises.

* Gather 1 cinamon stick.

* Eliminate the Nian beast.
Settings
Your fire ant colony must gather all ingredients for the hotpot in time and defeat the Nian beast. The queen is located next to a hotpot.

The mission starts during the day. New Year's Eve is on the 3rd night.

You can find magnolia saplings across the map. Milkweed seeds frequently land on the map and disappear after 90 seconds.

Ingredients are distributed randomly among 5 areas. They are yellow on the minimaps. Ingredients can be gathered even when food storage is full and are put directly in the hotpot. You gain the corresponding effect after you have completely gathered an ingredient. The final effect you receive only lasts for 25% of the intended duration. Guests aren't affected before they are successfully rescued.

* Szechuan peppercorns: Your ants doesn't take damage for 120 seconds.

* Fennel seeds: Your ants move 100% more quickly for 120 seconds.

* Chilli flakes: Your ants inflict 1000% more damage for 120 seconds.

* Star anises: You can spawn ants without requiring food for 200 seconds.

* Cinamon stick: Food is doubled in amount when they are put in storage for 180 seconds.

You only have access to fire ant workers. You start with 3 worker brood tiles.

You gain access to mortar wood ant shooters, taunt leafcutter ant majors, trap-jaw ant soldiers, army ant majors and big-headed ant supersoldiers by rescuing the respective guests. You can build some brood tiles for free after each succesful rescue.

Guests are distributed randomly among 5 areas. They will move toward the queen when you are close to them and attack any enemies on the way. They stay around and protect the queen for the rest of the mission. They are uncontrollable.

You can only play this mission by clicking on the lantern in the main menu, which appears from January 1st to February 28th.
Firecrackers
Firecrackers can only be found underground. Ants automatically carry nearby firecrackers. They can't attack enemies or gather food in the process.

You can disable firecracker gathering to prevent your ants from picking up firecrackers. You can only remove carried firecrackers by detonation.

Firecrackers are lit when the carrying ants encounter enemies and explode 5 seconds afterward. You can disable attacking to prevent detonation.

Firecrackers can knock any creatures in the air, even onto another map layer. Normal firecrackers inflict 2500 damage to the Nian beast, 200 damage to other enemies and 5 damage to allies. Super firecrackers inflict 5000 damage to the Nian beast, 400 damage to other enemies and 10 damage to allies. Damage is physical. The carrying ants don't take damage.

You can use turn adjacent wall tiles into soil tiles using 1/ 1/ 1/ 2/ 2 firecrackers.

The secret firecracker cavern is excavated next to your queen after the Nian beast has appeared. It generates 15 super firecrackers 5 seconds after each depletion.

Firecrackers are purple on the minimaps.
Notable enemies
Enemies in different territories are hostile to each other. The Nian beast, the uber beach wolf spider and the uber velvet worm are on one side and are hostile to everything else.

Green rove beetles, blue rove beetles, devil's coach horse beetles, mole crickets, beach wolf spiders, checkered beetles, small whip spiders, small velvet worms, bombardier beetles, false bombardier beetles, narrow-mouthed toads and dwarf salamanders live in your nest.

The uber beach wolf spider and the uber mole cricket live in your nest only on impossible.

The puzzle to the northwest of your queen has 4 paths. Guests gather at the end of the correct path. Tiny sand bear wolf spiders only appear when you dig into the wrong paths and aren't counted toward underground enemies.

Roaming enemies in the central area don't invade your nest.

Woodworms gather in crevices on the surface. Larval rove beetles and harvestmen roam the forest floor all day.

Jumping spiders, magnolia green jumpers, leaf-mimic praying mantises, red velvet ants and checkered beetles only appear on the surface during the day.

Velvet worms, bombardier beetles, false bombardier beetles and dwarf salamanders only appear on the surface at night.

The small island to the northwest of your nest is blocked by destructible barriers, which have 4000 HP. You can use a firecracker to destroy each barrier. Pine wood tree frogs come from the other side of the stream when you approach. They move away permanently when all barriers are destroyed.

The uber velvet worm circles around the western hill.

Beach tiger beetles, six-spotted tiger beetles and larval northern dune tiger beetles only gather in the southwestern basin and increase in number each day.

The extremely long pathway to the east of your nest doesn't have enemies. You can use firecrackers against the woodworms to the east of the basin to launch your ants onto the ridge and skip half of the journey. You must keep the remaining ants from departing through the pathway entrance until an ejected ant reaches the top to get the respective achievement.

Green rove beetles appear on either of the eastern hills when you approach. They only swarm on a single hill which you have set foot upon first and leave entirely when they can't find any enemies to fight.

The Nian beast is a cosplaying juvenile eastern newt with 200000 HP. After you have gathered all ingredients, it appears on the northern hill and invades your nest.

Trivia
* This is the only mission narrated entirely in Chinese. It is also the only mission that has mid-game cutscene.

* During the middle cutscene, an army ant major climb to the top of the eastern hill to look for the source of the tremor. This event always happens even if you haven't rescued any army ants.

* Adult green rove beetles on the twin hills can be knocked back.

* Full house is a poker hand with three of a kind and a pair. The respective achievement involves unlocking 3 large soldiers and 2 small soldiers.

* There is a bug in this mission if an ant is being knocked back by a firecracker while also being struck by a damaging status effect, the damaging effect will also be applied to the area around their brood tile. This occurs regardless of distance, or whether the ants are above ground.

Regarding the removal of strategies, I strongly disagree that strategies are "biased information" and do not belong. Wikis are meant to be a source of information that is easily accessible and cateloged, and saying "go to the steam forums or youtube for information" is contradictory to the purpose of a wiki. The other wikis for Hooded Horse games do have strategy sections on their pages, so why is this wiki different?

There is currently no way to find strategy information in a digestible and accessible manner for this game. Threads with information are rarely easy to find, not only having information be spread out across numerous different threads with different titles, those titles are not always clear regarding if they have strategies, and on top of that, even if a thread might appear like it could have some, there's no guarantee that it will due to relying on replies. Youtube videos similarly are not an effective option, as even assuming that a player does benefit from video-type teaching, there are multiple types of channels with content that ranges from advice and strategy as a mission is played, to full break-downs of species and their ideal playstyle. If one specific thing is making a player struggle, "watch this entire video" is not helpful advice compared to "read this paragraph".

Wikis are meant to give information, and tactics and methods that give an advantage to a player that isn't aware of that method is, objectively, un-biased information. By the definition given on the reversion, strategies fit. If a specific strategy added is too biased, then it can be removed or reworded to be less biased, but many strategies are fundimentally un-biased due to simply a tutorial on how a species functions. Most of the "unique" species, like Leafcutters, Matabele, and Termites, require playing very differently when compared to the "common" species like Wood ants or Black ants, so including a detailed tutorial on how a player must change their playstyle to suit the new species is as fitting to this wiki as could be. Otherwise, if no strategies whatsoever are allowed, there should be dedicated sub-page that either has strategies with a note of it being from players and not """official""", or have links to known strategies for each mission.

To add on, there is a distinct lack of unquestionably un-biased information regarding various enemies such as the Huntsman spider's appearance methods, the invulnerability of Lizards and other temporary predators, the Driver ants non-hostility phases, and the Stink Ant's reinforcement calling. That information unquestionably belongs on their pages, yet is absent.

Matabele ants (Megaponera analis) are playable in story missions, extra missions and custom games.
Abilities
Matabele ants use basic attack by biting. Medics can only use basic attack while mounting.

Medics can only use flash attack while on the ground. This ability is effectively just a normal melee attack. If Anesthetist medics are chosen, they can also use a sting attack that applies debuffs.

Soldiers can sting and poison enemies.

You must choose either anesthetist or fast-responder medics before playing.

*Anesthetist medics can sting and slow enemies down. They can make enemies take more damage at level 3.

*Fast-responder medics have increased movement speed and are not slowed by stepping on brood/food store tiles. They can evade attacks when they are out of combat at level 3.
Food processing
Matabele ants must feed on termites. Matabele ants only retain 10% of their original harvest amount while not harvesting termites and other food only give 10% of their original food amount. The mechanic is reversed for other omnivorous ant species.

You receive 66.67% of the building cost as dead termites from deleting tiles.

Matabele ants can harvest honeydew but can't relocate aphids.
Reviving
Ants are respawned normally after death. Dead ants remain on the ground for 4 minutes if you have Matabele ant medics.

Medics automatically bring nearby dead ants back to the queen chamber to revive them one at a time. They can't attack enemies or gather food in the process.

Revived ants are put in their original control groups but can be hold by any same-typed tiles. The number of active ants is represented by an addition of living ants and revived ants. You can only revive each ant once and each tile can only hold a single revived ant.

Revived ants only retain 60% of their original health and damage and can't be upgraded or downgraded.

You can disable casualty transporting to prevent your medics from picking up dead ants. They still have to finish ongoing revivals.

You can enable creature information to identify revived ants. Their level icons are grayed out.
Trivia
*In real life, a young Matabele ant queen will leave its original colony and bring along some workers to form its own. In the game, Matabele ant colonies always start with some soldier brood tiles.

*Matabele ants are named after the Matabele people, who were known for raiding nearby tribes during the nineteenth century.

*In real life, Matabele ants care for injured ants by removing the clinging dead termites and apply disinfectant secretions on amputated legs. Injured ants must be able to move on their own to receive any help. In the game, the process is simplified as a one-time revival.

*Medics can take dead ants out of flytraps and sundews for revival.
Matabele ants (Megaponera analis) are playable in story missions, extra missions and custom games.
Abilities
Matabele ants use basic attack by biting. Medics can only use basic attack while mounting.

Medics can only use flash attack while on the ground. This ability doesn't have any effects unless using Anesthetist medics.

Reviving
Revived ants are put in their original control groups but can be hold by any same-typed tiles. The number of active ants is represented by an addition of living ants and revived ants. You can only revive each ant once and each tile can only hold a single revived ant.
Revived ants only retain 60% of their original health and damage and can't be upgraded or downgraded.

You can disable casualty transporting to prevent your medics from picking up dead ants. They still have to finish ongoing revivals.

Settings
Your fire ant colony must grow large enough to form a raft and escape the upcoming flood. Your nest is located on the second layer of the mound. Nest entrance will be excavated automatically when the attacking waves are about to arrive.

You must reach a certain number of population points to complete the first objective. Workers give 1 point while soldiers give 1.5 points.

The mission starts during the day.

Water rises in the morning and in the evening. It washes away any creatures, excluding the amphibians, and lets you reach various resources through floating bridges.

You can build up to 20 bridges throughout the mission as water rises from the ninth layer to the third layer (1 - 3 - 1 - 5 - 2 - 6 - 2 respectively).

You have access to an empty milkweed plant at the start of the mission. There are 50 aphids on the map.

You can find magnolia saplings and carnivorous plants across the map. Milkweed seeds frequently land on the map and disappear after 90 seconds.

You must choose either pervasive or vigorous soldiers before playing the mission.
Non-player colony
The enemy little black ant colony is trapped on the southwestern island. You can only approach it on the second and the third night. Its nest is entirely flooded from the fourth day onward.
Notable enemies
Other enemies are on the same side and are hostile to the ants.

Woodworms, checkered beetles, false bombardier beetles, bombardier beetles and narrow-mouthed toads live in your nest.

There are 4 tunnels around the nest close to the edges, during the day Woodworms will occasionally spawn on one end and travel to the far end where they despawn. If the tunnel has been dug out, they will attack the colony instead. Narrow-mouthed toads replace them on the third day.

Surface enemies are washed up on the eastern side of the mound. They may fight among themselves to keep their own number in check.

Surface enemies gather in small groups during the day. They invade your nest at once 60 seconds before water rises in the evening. Red velvet ants only appear on the second and the third day on extreme and impossible.

* Day 1: Larval checkered beetles, larval false bombardier beetles, magnolia green jumpers

* Day 2: Adult checkered beetles, adult false bomberdier beetles and six-spotted tiger beetles

* Day 3: Adult checkered beetles, adult false bomberdier beetles, bombardier beetles, six-spotted tiger beetles and green lynx spiders

* Day 4: Checkered beetles, false bombardier beetles, six-spotted tiger beetles, bombardier beetles, magnolia green jumpers, green lynx spiders and red velvet ants

Juvenile eastern newts and pine woods tree frogs only appear on the surface at night. They don't invade your nest. Eastern newts only appear from the second night onward.

Surface enemies freely roam the mound and become hostile to the amphibians only at night. They randomly invade your nest before water rises in the morning.

The 3 wasp mantidflies can heal 1 HP every 0.1 second when they rest on high locations and only attack when you approach. The eastern one doesn't attack before the second day on easy, medium and hard.

Titan

The size-level 1/ 1/ 1/ 2/ 3 great blue skimmer flies across the map. It lands near your nest on the third/ third/ third/ second/ second night. It only takes off in the morning before landing again on the third night on extreme and impossible. It will remain there for the rest of the mission if undisturbed.

It flies to the third layer and doesn't take damage after it has been reduced to 55% of its health. It will move away permanently if you don't mount it within 30 seconds. It will fly to the first layer, become vulnerable again and stay there for the rest of the mission if you succeed.

If you have prepared a pheromone group on the third layer or if it has already been flooded, the great blue skimmer will fly directly to the first layer. You still have to mount it in time to prevent it from leaving.

Challenge

Six-spotted fishing spiders appear near bridging locations shortly after water rises in the morning or 90 seconds after water rises in the evening. They disappear 60 seconds before water rises. They are hostile to the amphibians.

Nearby spiders will move onto the nearer bank to attack when you are halfway done building a bridge.
Strategy
* Particularly on higher difficulties, clearing some of the enemies that gather before an attack can significantly reduce the difficulty of the assault.

* The ability of Fire ants to build bridges is based on their body size. This means that each soldier is better than each worker as a bridge-part, and upgraded soldiers are the best, level 3 especially due to gaining double the soldiers. Quickly gathering a force of level 3 soldiers allows for much more reliable bridge construction.

* Having multiple groups of soldiers of varying numbers is helpful when building bridges due to making most or all of a bridge out of one group and using another to cross. Pheromone groups update their destinations at a static rate, meaning if two groups of ants mix to create a bridge, when deconstructing that bridge it will take longer than if multiple groups are redirected at once.

* There is an extremely high density of food inside the nest, making for a substantial boost in soldiers before you need to venture outside. Using Vigorous soldiers can allow you to kill enemies more easily, allowing for more food to be collected.
** The food directly below the Queen is unguarded.
** The food along the very top of the nest opens a spawning tunnel but is unguarded otherwise. Tunneling through the passage left of the single False Bombardier beetle to the north lets you reach it without fighting.
***If you have gathered a reasonably sized army, the False Bombardier beetle can be defeated for some additional food, and more space to build.
** The food directly to the right has 1-3 woodworms guarding it, but can be easily dealt with once other food is collected and a small force of soldiers is built up. Additionally, the group of enemies further to the right is two separate groups. The lower group that that curves is slightly larger group of woodworms guarding more food.
**If playing on New Game+ with access to Formicarium Adaptations, disabling attacking on all ants before digging out most if not all groups of enemies nearby, then allowing Fierce Mother and Royal Guard to defeat them, can offer a monumental boost in food. Not only are they guarding food stores on their own, but they will give a large amount of food by harvesting their bodies afterwards. Due to the free ant spawning from Royal Guard, any workers lost when digging out enemies will be regained for free.

*The Woodworms and Toads that spawn inside the tunnels in the nest only appear at specific points. Having a batch of soldiers stay in the nest group can let you deal with intruders while the majority of your force can focus on outside tasks.

*Once the Little Black ant colony can be first reached, even if you have no intention of raiding the nest, sending soldiers with attack and gather turned off can let them move past the Little Black ants will let you collect the aphids easily.

*The Aphids on the small island to the south can be collected at the start of the mission, or after the waters rise once. Before the waters rise, the bridge needed is extremely small, so collecting as much food as possible inside the nest and then rushing soldiers to gather the Aphids can give a major boost to food income. Just make sure to disable food collection, as there are two carnivorous plants along the path.
**Be cautious when collecting the Aphids here, as well as on the Little Black Ant island. Both islands have multiple levels, and if the water rises it will destroy the bridge, but may not drown all the ants, resulting in some being trapped. They can assist with building a bridge to be rescued, but otherwise will cripple your army size until they are rescued or die.

*When attempting the Challenge mode, Fishing Spiders will remain attacking until there are almost no ants remaining. Gathering your ants before the bridge spot, beginning to partially build it, and then once the spiders move in ordering the workers to return to the initial spot, allows you to fight the spiders with more of your army prepared.

*When the waters rise during the evening, the Fishing spiders do not spawn immediately. If you gather your ants at a location before the water rises, you may be able to build a bridge and collect Aphids or some of the food before the spiders spawn and stop progress. This can help significantly when attempting to get A Bridge Too Many, as you can easily build a bridge and immediately retreat without collecting the food/aphids to count towards bridges completed.
Trivia
* During the victory cutscene, the colony forms a raft with the queen on top and floats away. Six-spotted tiger beetles and larval false bombardier beetles appear in this cutscene even if you have killed all surface enemies, trying to attack the queen.

* There is another defeat cutscene, which happens when water floods your nest. It shows the dead fire ant queen floating to the water surface, among her dead brood.

* Enemies float upside down when they are carried to the eastern shore by the water. This make senses because their lungs and spiracles are located on their bottom side.

* Dead big headed ant queens can be found to the southeast of your queen. It can be inferred that this mound was home of a big-headed ant colony before it was overrun by beetles.

Settings
Your Matabele ant colony must defend itself from the threat of 3 titans. Nest entrance will be automatically excavated after you have played for 90 seconds.

The mission starts at night.

You have access to 3 termite colonies. Dead colony termites disappear after 2 minutes while other dead enemies disappear after 5 seconds. Dead enemies in your nest, dead termite queens and dead titans don't disappear.

You must choose either anesthetist or fast-responder medics before playing the mission. You start with 20/ 16/ 13/ 10/ 10 soldier brood tiles.
Non-player colonies
Enemy termite colonies are hostile to each other.

Minor soldiers and major soldiers are kept around the queen and are only deployed to protect the gathering groups.

Brood tiles with eliminated termites can't incubate for 12 minutes. Enemy colonies don't get free nanitic workers when they don't have any food or workers left.

Enemy colonies retreat inside at noon and gather lignocellulose within their territories for the rest of the day.
Notable enemies
Enemies are on the same side and are hostile to the ants.

Earwigs and termites live in your nest.

Surface enemies don't invade your nest. They may fight among themselves to keep their own number in check.

African tiger beetles, rainbow lizards and giant African mantises only appear on the surface during the day.

Rainbow lizards escape when they have below 45% of their health. Large lizards will take medium ones with them.

Earwigs, large sun spiders and alligator back scorpions only appear on the surface at night.

Titans

The size-level 1/ 1/ 2/ 3/ 4 titans appear one by one each night and invade your nest. They can excavate and release underground enemies in your nest. Night doesn't end until the titans are eliminated.

The huge sun spider appears on the third night. It destroys your surface nest entrance to let other titans invade on later days. This is a scripted event. It will stun all creatures on the surface if it is damaged too quickly.

The huge African giant centipede appears on the fourth night. It can rush forward and remove mounting ants when it has below 80% of its health. The cooldown is 23 seconds.

The huge emperor scorpion appears on the fifth night. It can become invulnerable for 5 seconds each time it distances itself.

Challenge

Assassin bugs appear near termite mounds after noon when Termites begin to harvest. They initially only spawn nearby two of the three Termite mounds, however they increase in numbers each day, and can begin to spawn near all three mounds on higher difficulties after a few days have passed.

At the start of the mission, they appear by the left mound.
On the first evening, they appear by the center and right mounds.
On the second evening, they appear by the left and right mounds.
On the third evening, they appear by all three mounds.
Strategies
While playing as the Matabele, it is useful to create groups of workers with attack turned off to follow your soldiers around. While raiding, the workers can collect Termites that fall, while the soldiers continue to attack, greatly improving how much food is obtained during each raid.

Despite the narrator's warning about over-pillaging one mound, doing so can be very effective, especially on higher difficulties. Killing a Termite Queen will cause several thousand food to appear as the colony dies off, so having massive worker swarms ready to gather food can give a gigantic boost in resources to create stronger and better raiding parties. Even with around 200 workers, you may not be able to collect all the food before it despawns, so creating massive numbers of workers can help improve the food gain.

Due to the massive size of the three Titans, having multiple groups of soldiers attacking from all sides can significantly increase your swarm's damage. If the soldiers get stuck on one side, turning off attack and having the group move past the Titan before reactivating it can surround the Titan.

When attempting Queen's Guard, attacking the Titans outside of the nest is extremely important. While it isn't impossible to defeat them inside before the Queen is hurt, it greatly increases the risk that a Titan will move around and end up hurting the Queen with area damage. The Centipede's battle is most dangerous, as it frequently repositions itself and can easily move towards the queen. All 3 Titans will charge for the nest once enough damage is dealt, however the Sun Spider and Emperor Scorpion will prefer to attack ants over repositioning, so when their health is dropping while outside, send soldiers to the nest entrance to instantly surround and distract it with combat.

When attempting Terrible Assassins, be cautious during noon-time and retreat immediately once the Narrator announces evening has come. Assassin bugs begin to emerge after noon, and will spawn anywhere from instantly at evening to being delayed by a minute or more. With delayed spawning, it can be easy to have many ants beyond its spawning point, and result in failing the achievement.

Assassin bugs (Acanthaspis petax) are challenge mode enemies in savannah documentary missions.
Abilities
Assassin bugs use basic attack by stabbing.

They can execute any ants and equip them to become invulnerable. They can only use this ability when they are already invulnerable. The effect can stack in length up to 10 times. Dead ants fall off 20 seconds after being equipped.

Assassin bugs can execute termites but can't equip them.

They initially spawn with several ants already equipped, allowing them to begin executing ants immediately
Strategies
Due to them spawning with ants equipped, they can't be killed for a short time after spawning, and if a raiding column is close by, they can instantly begin eliminating your ants. Once they spawn, they should be left alone until all dead ants fall off their backs. They can only execute ants when they are invulnerable, but their basic attack is extremely weak, so allowing a group of soldiers/medics to group up before rushing them can eliminate them easily.

Be cautious with any low health units when attacking, and avoid attacking with workers. If an ant dies to its basic attack, it will equip it and become invulnerable. Either try to avoid groups that have a large number of low health soldiers, or collect a large enough swarm to kill it before it can react,
Appearances
You can encounter assassin bugs in:
*Triage

*Drive Them Back
Trivia
*Only Nymph Assassin Bugs are known to use camouflage, with mature adults no longer collecting corpses.
*Nymphs have been observed to play dead if their disguise fails. In game, they are not able to do this.
* The corpse collection appears to have a secondary defensive effect for the Bugs, where the corpses can be released if attacked, covering any predator in distractions and blocking its mouth, giving the Bug time to escape.
* It is not currently confirmed how the corpse collection of Assassin bugs disguises them from their prey, but there are several theories.
** A theory is that they collect so many bodies that they become unrecognizable to other creatures. This would result in prey not registering it as a predator to be cautious of, and predators not registering it as a preferred meal, overlooking it in favor of their preferred prey.
** It is theorized that the disguise is olfactory in nature, resulting in the Assassin Bug smelling like, and being mistaken as, ants.
** Experiments that focused on visual predators such as Jumping Spiders and Geckos suggest the disguise is partially visual as well, resulting in the Bug being mistaken as a swarm of ants.
*** This visual mistake of ant-eating predators would protect Assassin Bugs due to appearing as a dangerous swarm rather than a few individuals

Either try to avoid groups that have a large number of low health soldiers, or collect a large enough swarm to kill it before it can react,
Trivia
*Only Nymph Assassin Bugs use camouflage, Adults do not use this tactic after maturing.
*Nymphs will play dead if their disguise fails. In game, they are not able to do this.
* The corpse collection has a secondary defense effect, where the corpses can be released if attacked, covering any predator in distractions and blocking its mouth, giving the Bug time to escape.
