Resources
Overview
Resources are grown, produced, carried, and consumed on the pirate haven to sustain it and the fleet. Constructing new buildings, building and repairing ships, and supplying the crews are the primary drain on the island's resources.
Construction Resources are the first to be needed in a new pirate haven. The first few buildings and the first ship are constructed from Planks. Many buildings also or instead require Stone Blocks, and later buildings and ships require other construction resources with more involved production chains. It is important to have a stockpile of construction resources on the island.
Upkeep Resources are those passively consumed by the pirates, whether workers in buildings or crew on the ships. The first of these encountered are Stew and Booze. Early buildings staffed by Greenhands require upkeep of 1 Stew per worker. Once the first ship is built, the crew of Swabbies require 1 Stew and 1 Booze each. Like construction resources, having stockpiles of upkeep resources are important. However, since these resources are consumed passively and continuously instead of at obvious moments by your actions, it is important to pay attention to the island's net production of these resources, shown with positive and negative numbers in green and red (default colors), respectively, to be sure that production is outpacing consumption.
Intermediate Resources are everything in between. The first, Hardwood is used in the production chains of both Construction Resources (for example, Planks) and Upkeep Resources (for example, Rum). Having these ready in stockpiles or in steady supply will improve your island's ability to meet its needs for upkeep and new construction.
Production chains

Production chains are visible in the Overviews interface (default hotkey I. The first multi-step resource required, Black Powder requires five producers, two deposits, and Fertile Area. The deposits, buildings required, resources produced at each step are shown on the production chain overview for Black Powder.

Each building in a production chain consumes its input resources (if any) and generates its output resources at a specific speed and at a certain ratio. For example, the Sawmill converts 4 Hardwood into 10 Planks per minute. The production progress wheel shows this conversion in its detail tooltip. In the example screenshot, the Walk the Plank booster from the Compass has added bonus production to this Sawmill.
To function, the Sawmill must have its required input resource in its input storage, and there must be room in its output storage to add the produced resource. If no Fetchers have been assigned by a Warehouse to pick up the Planks, the Sawmill may not produce anything for many minutes, wasting the upkeep costs of the workers and the opportunity to stockpile valuable construction resources.
See the Buildings article for more information on optimizing buildings.
