Kings are the main characters/factions in 9 Kings, appearing both as the player character and the enemies they face.
Players can choose one King at the start of each game, before selecting which Perks to equip and which difficulty to play in. Each king has 9 unique cards, 9 unique perks, and unique royal decrees, in addition to universal perks and royal decrees available to all kings.
The player will usually face up to 4 unselected kings in a run, alongside a copy of their own King as a "rebel" army.
From the start, only the King of Nothing will be available. Other kings can be unlocked by reaching various milestones while playing, and progress towards unlocking each king carries over between runs.
The choice of king also affects the color of the UI, the background music and the visual appearance of the map. The last played king also changes the main menu's background.
