Merchants are events that allow the player to use gold to buy cards from every king. There are three merchants, and each merchant appears once during a run to offer the player cards from their shop. After the year's battle has concluded and the player has selected a card from the defeated king, the merchant shop offers 6 randomly selected cards for the player to purchase. The player can also spend money to reroll the merchant's selection of cards.
The first card a player buys costs 30 gold, and every subsequent purchase from the merchant increases by 15 gold. The initial reroll cost is 10 gold, and each subsequent reroll increases by 10 gold. Purchase cost resets to 30 with each new merchant visit but the reroll cost does not reset.
Types

There are three merchants, the Jack of Structures, the Jack of Magic, and the Jack of Arms. The three merchants appear on year 10, year 25, and year 31 of the run. If the king continues the run after winning the final battle, a merchant appears on year 40 and every 11 years subsequently. The order in which the merchants visit is random, but each merchant will visit only once in a run. If the run continues after victory, the merchants visit in a random order and merchants may make consecutive visits.
Each merchant sells cards from every king and has a unique inventory composed of all the cards of a specific card type.
- Architect: sells all Building and Tower cards, plus the Base card of the player's selected king
- Sage: sells all Enchantment and Tome cards
- Warmonger: sells all Troop cards
Each merchant shop is stocked with 6 cards randomly selected from the merchant's inventory. In addition to their standard inventory, all merchants also have a chance to sell special cards.
Perks and decrees
Several perks and Royal Council decrees can affect the merchant's stock.
- The lucky perk increases the chance of special cards appearing in merchant shops by 10% per rank
- The persistent perk gives 2 free rerolls per rank
- The King of Greed peddler perk gives 1 free merchant purchase per rank
- The Outsourcing royal decree gives 9 free rerolls
- The King of Greed Bargain royal decree halves the cost of merchant cards
